Does anyone have any experience with the Yamaha DT 100? I am looking at one for my girlfriend who has 0 riding experience. What is the power band, suspension, weight like? I found one locally very cheap and was wondering if it was even worth looking at.

I grew up riding one. I loved that bike. Smooth powerband and easy to ride.

It is not worth too much though.

Having said that I would love to have one again just for the memories.

The RT100 uses the same engine, suspension and frame as the DT100. The only real difference is the design of the pipe and the plastic. I think the tires are the same too.

It will be a good beginner bike but if she improves rapidly she'll get bored with it.

It also has oil injection so if you are buying used you want to check it out. The oil container is under the seat and the injector is on the right side at the front of the crank case.

I think the bike is/was the best bike to learn on -

1)very light weight compared to the 4 stroke counterpart(at least 20lbs)
2)flat torque curve for ease of throttle/clutch control
3)easier to pick up off the ground when crashed - see #1
4)much easier to start - it's a two stroke
5)will last forever if taken care of - the basic motor dates to the mid 70's - there are examples out there with several thousand miles on them!
6)She could probably ride it a year or two for next to nothing.

My buddies had '83 DT100K's. They were great fun for putting around on trails and great to learn on. I will definitely have to look at this RT 100 you guys mentioned. I had heard the model name before, but never saw a picture or read anyone make a connection between the two.

COOL!
