YZ250 low to mid porting ride report!

A couple of weeks ago, i recieved my cyclinder back from Eric Gorr with the porting to move the power to low to mid area of the power band....here goes with my report.

first impressions: quite some expoxy filling the transfer ports but the boost ports appeared to have a lot of material removed also. Only a small amount of metal removed from the intake and exhaust ports. It also looks like the base was indeed turned down and the head clearanced for the piston. The squish band looked quite wide also. All mods as expected.

During the installation the only headace was dowel went missing at some point so after getting that part all was bolted back together. nicely.

When doing the first few heat cycles i noticed how much quieter and crisper the engine felt, it also felt like it was only slightly lean, but i expect this may have been a temperature thing. The piston supplied was 0.1 mm larger than the old one so this explains why it was quieter.

Onto the track. bear with me here folks, the old top end was quite worn with some blow by past the rings, so it is difficult to give a precise comparision with the old setup but here is my best shot!

Crispness, this thing is so crisp its rediculous! even more crisp than a freshly cut iceberg lettuce! :)

Jetting, exactly the same as before, just a small amount of oil at the tip of the stinger. Ive gone from 50 to 46 on the pilot and the main is 175 (178 stock). the needle is stock (NE3J), 2nd from top. i tried to lean the needle before but it ran wierd....maybe 1/2 a clip like the new RM's? Conditions So Cal, motul 600 32:1 pump gas.

Onto the track: This thing rips, plain and simple....it was fast before but now it is incredible! There are no susprises, its totally honest in that you get exactly what you ask for.....instantly! It pulls from the bottom and keeps going. I expected it to sign off at the higher RPMs, but it contines to rev all the way, even free-er and better than before. I wonder if this is because of the lighter wiseco piston. I was worried that since the SST pipe is known to be a revver, that it would be incompatible with the low to mid porting but it appears the porting compliments the pipe by adding to the bottom without taking any thing from the top.

Is the bike easier to ride? Yes and no! the yes part is that it pulls much stronger and smoother from the bottom and only needs a quick dab of clutch to get into the power. It is also easier to stay in 3rd where before a downshift was needed so its easier to ride jumps in that respect. The no part is that is that now it moves to top speed a bit quicker and then keeps going, so that i overshot a few corners! :p

In all i am a very happy customer, and i recomend the work. :yeehaw:
I saw a few posts about turning yz250's into trail or woods bikes and there were some suggestions about this porting. Now the bike really feels like a balls out MX weapon, and personally i wouldnt want to take it anyware near fixed objects such as trees! Before it was fast, now it still goes fast, but it goes faster much quicker.

my setup: 2001 YZ250, SST pipe, shorty silencer, low to mid EG porting and everything else stock. 46 pilot, NE3J 2nd clip, 175 main. I dont need to bother with the v-force or fancy reeds now!

Good report Bruce! That thing sounded so sweet. I didn't even have to ride it just listening I knew the difference from a stock YZ250(as I do have a tad bit of expirence with these bikes).

I would still like to take you up on trading bikes for a moto or two.

Thanks srKX, i just dont trust them trees, ive heard some of them have legs and will jump out on you!

Thanks endo! I really didnt do it or myself justice at Piru, with a lay off and then to a new track with the ride off the end of the world feeling, i couldnt get into a good rhythm. But the take hom message is how crisp it feels, it gives everything you ask.

Once warrmed up, i must have got 3 hrs of track time at elsinore over a 5hr period. I am hoping to get to the MXDN track to test 4th gear soon....before they close it for the event, maybe next saturday? there is definately more to follow with this report.....watch this space.

Its a shame i dont know anyone with an 02 or 03 for a back to back test!

I'm waiting for my '97 YZ 250 cylinder to come back with the same mods. From your report, I now have that feeling like when I was 5 yrs. old and woke up at 4:00 AM Christmas morning and had to lay there waiting for everbody else to get up so I could get at the goodies!

Aaaarrrrrgghhhh!!!!!

Bruce And others, I am thinking of going big bore and mo better all over porting on my 99 RM 250 and am wondering about the turn around time?

bchapham, good report. What was involved in shipping the engine from England to the USA ? Any customs issues, packing issues ? Did you send over the whole engine ?

TR: although i am english, i am a resident of california so there was no problems. I have sent motorcycle parts to england from here though..... a friend of mine restores vintage MX bikes and buys parts off ebay but people wont send to the UK, so i recieve the stuff here and post it on.

i expect the only issues you will have are time and expense! Maybe call eric i think he has some spare cylinders so you might be able to purchase/ exchange etc. enjoy!

Does anybody have any input on the Mo better porting? I am thinking about getting this done to mine.

depends on your application. Mo better will give a best all around powerband. Mid to top will give a really peaky powerband but these are for expert riders on fast open MX tracks. I went with the low to mid since this is for the smaller SX tracks and also trail riding so it is easier to ride and you end up going fater. That said, since i have a high rev pipe, the porting only adds to the bottom end and the porting and pipe seem to compliment each other. however, it is not always a good idea to match a rev pipe with a torque porting setup since they can cancel each other out!

best bet, call eric and tell him your exact appliaction and what you want. be warned though, porting wont make an MX bike ther perfect trail bike or vica versa!

I had results almost exactly like yours when Eric did the same to my '93 WR/YZ250. One thing that made it even better was a set of v-force reeds. The delta v-force cage really had the bike coming on even stronger after I got it jetted right.

It is something to consider.

give it a few weeks viking, i been looking for this thread for ages but couldnt find it. nothing real special, ive got a v-force to try and also maybe a heavier clutch for hook up. if i get really into it, ive found a dyno locally and may give it a run, but to be honest, i havent ridden in ages so thats what i need to concentrate on.
