Does anyone know if the lighting coil output is 12 volts DC or AC? I realize the coil itself makes AC, but is there a rectifier and/or voltage reg. in the system?

I made the mistake of trying to check the voltage with a digital voltmeter-it varies all over the place. I need to check it with an analog meter.

Thanks for the reply. Last night I used an analog voltmeter on it. Puts out ~20 volts AC at a fast idle. Today I'll buy a $3 rectifier at Radio Shack so I can charge my little 12 V battery.
