I've got a KX65 with a dead motor and was thinking of trying to squeeze a four stroke motor in it to use for a play/ trail bike for my kids or maybe even my wife. Anyone have any experience with what motors might work best?
Thanks,
I'll venture a guess that the XR80/100 engine would be too tall for the KX65 chassis. They seem to be a reasonable fit on a 85 chassis which is significantly bigger.
I'm not sure, but I was thinking a klx 110 motor would work, being made by Kawasaki, and, that most everything else would work from a klx 110 to a kx65. I was also wanting to transform my '02 65 into a pitbike :ride:
you will need all new electricals aswell as the motor try looking on **** for the chinese 50cc-110cc motors we have two of the chinese 110cc dirt bikes i think they are good for there price (around US$600 each) or if u would like to go the cheap way? buy one of the pocket bike motors it'll be good for the kids and great to teach the missus how to ride as they are autos and the motors are dirt cheap
It seems that most people go a different direction. They will usually take a KLX 110 and put the 65 suspension on it.
Honestly, I wish someone would just take the performance 4 stroke wave to this size. It would sell like hotcakse...of course, maybe that is why they don't - the 2 stroke sales would all but die in this market.
The KX65 motor makes somewhere in the neighborhood of 16 horsepower - stock. Why take a heavier engine, that makes far less power, and stuff it into that frame?

i agree! the big four should come out every year with a limited production of bikes that would fit the advanced woods riders better, of course keep the race bikes.
take a look at BBR they are selling CR80's with XR100 engines for about 8K.
imagine if the big four did this? would we see
CRF100 on an 85 frame
YZF125 a ttr 125 engine in an 85 frame
KX125F a klx 125 engine in an 85 frame
and on and on. these posibilities would fit every one in between who wants a bike to get moderatly aggressive on and excelent trailability. you all know what i mean, try getting some air on a CRF 100 or a TTR 125. as for race bike sales there will still be races! maybe some added classes.
I suspect that they will. The rage of the "pit bike" will spill over to these others. THe envioro pressures will also factor in me thinks. It's just a matter of time.
A potent 125 4s in an 85cc chassis will be awesome!
