gaskets

Should engine gaskets be put on dry or coated with some type of sealer?
If they should be coated what works the best?

I have been told by the mechanic at my local shop that they should be put on dry. I have always done that, and never noticed any problems.

Freedette told me dry.

I believe the metal head gasket comes pre-coated.
