JR50 probs

Hi All, my son has a 1980 JR50, which was mine as a kid and now I'm rebuilding it for him. I tore down the motor and noticed that the kickstarter turns over easy by hand but the piston is not moving up and down, but the sprocket gear, on the other side, is moving. Is there a gear inside the case by the kickstart gear that could of broken?
