Guards may help with protecting your kneecap, but if you are looking for knee protection, I suggest you look for braces. Thump has a great review you should seriously check out.

If you're just looking for knee pads, HRP makes a nice product. They have wide staps that are long enough to fit around big legs. The pads also fit into the boot nicely. I've had a couple different pair and the HRP's are the best I've seen.

As far as pads go, I really like my Moose M1 knee/shin guards. Comfortable and fit into my boots as well. I haven't owned any other brands so there could be a better choice that I'm not aware of.
