At your height, I would probably start concentrating more on strength and endurance than just weight. Less weight is obviously better for the dynamics of the bike, but there's only so far you can go while still retaining strength.
I'm 6'4", 205 lbs., and am trying for a 187 lbs. race weight. That is about how much fat I can lose, I would think.
Hey moo I remember those days...played middle linebacker in high school as a 5'10" 117# beanpole (college filled me out to a solid blob at 6'0" 250#) I am back down to 210 and aiming for 190 someday..
Now I watch my son the eternal eating machine 5'4" and 92# (no wonder we are respringing the CR125 we bought from Rich;) )
A few of you guys must be sticks? I am 6'2" @ 215 lbs and race bicycles and harescrambles. When I was at my peak a couple years ago I still weighed 190 lbs. and only had around an 8% body fat.
Remember that your body requires a minimum of 3% body fat just to live. Also, muscle weighs more than fat so working out will help lose inches but not always weight. In some cases you can gain weight and lose inches if you have very poor muscle tone.
A 5'11 155 pound kid here, have gained 10 pounds in the last months, trying to get up to 165 and stay around my guess of 10% bfp(have a 4 pack lol) and then this summer cut down to around to any one digit number around 6-8 % before football 2 a days start and stay close to 160 pounds.:)
I'm 6'3" and 194# I could probably tend to lose about 8-10#. Much more than that and I think it would be too much. The lowest I've ever been at this height was 175# after puking for a week sick as a dog from some virus. I think 178# is fine maybe a little light actually.
I wouldn't focus too much on weight, one would be much better off getting in a regular year
round exercise program and having a good diet. If you can maintain that, then your
weight will come around. Good luck;)
