Update: I got him the XR80 and he's taking to it very well. I let him just cruise around in first the first day. Then took him to the track (Elsinore) and he road a few laps in 1st on the peewee track. Then I started him in 2nd and let him have at it in 2nd for the rest of that day and one other. Then on his 4th day of riding I took him out to Perris off A street and he followed me around the trails without shifting. That afternoon I taught him how to shift and he took right to it didn't have any problem at all. Yesterday we were at the track at Elsinore again and he's running 1:07-1:10 on the peewee track and about 1:36 on the 60/80 track. He might outgrow this bike faster than I thought, I figured 2 years but at this rate it might only be a year before he's ready for a 2 stroke 85.

Great, does this mean that there will be another kid on an xr80 passing me all day?

Kids on dirtbikes with big smiles, you gotta love it.
