I recently got a 98 YZ250. It's in need of new tires ... front and rear. I'm new to dirt bikes (been riding street for years) and live/ride in So California. What's a good tire for this area (and a newbie)? I'll be taking the bike to a track (Saddleback and/or Elsinore) and will ride in areas like El Mirage (desert) a lot.

Wow ... no response. How about I get more specific? I am thinking about the Dunlop D756s. Good or bad choice?

Thanks

756s are the best tire you can buy. They work in enery type of terrain
You con get a tire package from chaparral with a 756 front and rear
for $100. Look in the back of a Dirt bike magazine with a chaparral
setion and they should have the tire packages advertized. They don't
advertise the package in there catolog.

I just swithed to Michelin's, Starcross MS front and M12 rear, from Dunlops and I'm happy with the way they hook up.

I just wondered the same thing about tires and what is more popular. After spending an afternoon searching and reading on DRN. I came to the conclusion that by far the most popular rear tire is the Michelin S12. The front gets mixed reviews, but in short there is alot of people running the following tires. in order it would be like this. the Dunlop 752f, Michelin S12f, Michelin M-12f, Dunlop 756f. I am very surprised to find that Michelin tires are so popular. I have never tried them yet but I'm ordering a set of S12 front and rear. Supposedly the durability and the ability to hook up even when the knob has rounded makes them a standout and justify the cost. note, the f at the end means it is the front tire. Just do a search on s12 and you'll see.

Dunlop 752? I don't see that one on the Dunlop web site. Is that a discontinued model? If so, what replaced it?

I like the 756 also, but I have a feeling that you are going to be riding harder terrain than most. I've heard the 739 is good on blue-groove. Some also use the M-12. Another tire that I recently read a good review on for the hard intermediate terrain is the Maxxis IT. The 756 won't last long on very hard terrain, but I love it everywhere else.

For offroad (not MX), S-12 is by far THE tire of choice around here (varied woods terrain). Hooks up great even when worn. Front has been the 755, but they're hard to find any more. 756 doesn't last very long, but it works well. 773 is the one I'm still looking for reviews on, looks like a good tire -- hope it holds up longer than the 756. A good Michelin front is the M-12, seems to hold up better than the S12 front and performs as well.

773 is the fastest wearing tire I have ever had in 15 years of riding. 2 35 mile trail ride and the tire was visibley worn and giving up. The front 773 hooks very well, I will continue running it. I switch to a Soft Starcross rear. The traction is good. The wear is the same as 756. Why they would discontinue the wonderful 752 is unexplainable.

obviously a matter of opinion or personal preference. i tried a 752 at another's recommendation and found that i couldn't wait to wear it out so i could put a 756 back on.

Time for a tire poll?!?!?

I've been using 756 Fronts and 752 rears, works pretty good. My Xr came with used IRCs on it, they dont seem as good as the 756/752.

What I really want to hear is what people think of the 773s, or is that 733s?

I think I'm gonna try the 756s. Since I'm a dirt newbie, I probably won't wear out the tire too quickly.

This thread started out slow ... but now it's rockin! Thanks for all the input!

That would be so cool! I officially request one that takes into consideration if the rider is trail riding or racing MX.

756 rear - good wear, good forward traction on most surfaces. But poor sideways traction. When I used one I found myself avoiding rear wheel sliding as it was scarily unpredictable. The s12 rear doesn't wear any better imo, but the sideways traction is very predictable, which makes it a better tire imo. I'm yet to find a front tire I really like, but the pirelli mt44 is better than anything else I've tried (752,755,756, s12).

756's don't even compare to michelin s-12/m-12's. you will twice as much wear out of the michelin and they still hook-up good after the knobs round, unlike 756's.

i ride trails exclusively. hate 752's f&r no traction or wear in sandy conditions. 756's are great for traction, but do wear quick, esp. the rear. think i'll stick with the 756 front and try a Mich on the rear. any suggestions for sandy, rocky terrain?

I like the 756 front and rear for a good all around surface tire. The rear does wear fast on the surfaces I ride. If you ride primarily on hard pack MX tracks, there may be better choices.

A few things you should never ask another dirt biker:
  • What tires should I use?
  • What oil should I use?
  • How often should I grease my bearings?
  • Is it going to rain today?
