I have heard a rumor that KTM is going to make a 144 soon? True or not?

I am still a 250 2 stroke guy, tho- have been for 3 years. I sold my 01' 250F in 03' and have not regretted it.

According to my calculations, if they raise the size of a 125 to 144, the equivelant raise for the 250 2str. would be 287ccs. (15% increase in displacement). Sounds good to me - a little more bottom end, and I could put flywheel weight on to control wheel spin if I needed it.

There is only one thing stopping Pros from going back to 2 strokes and that is the fact that the FIM have set out to deliberately destroy 2 stroke racing by setting up a bunch of rules that give 2Ts no chance......
Glad to hear a voice of sanity on this point  . I'm still hoping that the consumer will apply enough pressure to keep 2-strokes around.

WHile your calculation may be correct, it might be a little more valid to look at the 144 as 57.6% of the 250F displacement. With that in mind, a 260 2 stroke would compare better with the 450F's.

Those bikes still exist; they're called TTR's or CRF-F's (NOT R or X suffixes) or the like.

That's part of the rub: folks think that since a CRF450R is a four-stroke and the old XR was also a four-stroke, the CRF must be just as bulletproof as an XR engine. That just isn't the case.

Yes, I did the math on that aspect too, but I thought 260 cc's sounded a little inadequate to contest a 450. 287 cc's works out to 63.77% of the 450's displacement and the original ratio ( 450 to 250) is 55.55%. A 2% ratio jump to compensate for the 450's hardly seems fair. The 125 2 strokes start at 50% of the 4 str. cc's ,so it is hard to compare too directly.

That works out to ratio % increase of 8.22 percent with 287 cc's, compared with the ratio % of 7.6% in the lite class by upping the 125 to a 144 cc.

And if you upped the ratio increase ( not the direct percent increase in cc's) the same in each class the 250 2 str. would be legal at 286 cc's.

So my vote is for at least 286 cc's for the 250 2 str., in this long winded explanation!

The KTM 144SX was on their list of models for the 2007 bikes, whether there are any of them out there I'm not sure. Because they're 144 from the factory they wouldn't be legal in the Lites class though.

This is from another forum and is food for thought -

New Class proposal (amateur racing only) -

1. 100-144cc 2 or 4 stroke
2. 145-250cc 2 or 4 stroke
3. 251-650cc 2 or 4 stroke
4. Add a 2-stroke only class

To get it passed, contact your AMA Off-Road Congressman and let them know that you want this to be reality.

AMATEUR racing is the life-blood of our sport, let's straighten it out.

If you want any chance of leveling the playing field in AMATEUR racing like this:

100-144cc 2 or 4 stroke(call it 125 if you want)
145-250cc 2 or 4 stroke
251-650cc 2 or 4 stroke
Add a 2-stroke only class

Email the following people with any positive opinion on this and why you feel it is a good idea. They are taking names and bringing it up in the AMA congress this fall for submission:

jay@halls-cycles.com
mbonnell@hughes.net

The quotes are from another board. MXKING is the AMA congressman who wrote the proposal.

There's still plenty of time left on this, passing proposals and voting won't take place for a couple of months so please send the emails if it sounds good to you. Apparently a similar proposal to this made it through proposal stage last year and only missed out coming into effect by 1 vote, so it does stand a realistic chance.
