Just bought a 04 KDX 220 and I am thinking that the jetting may be way off, power valve is gummed up. Maybe someone has some advice. The previous owner didn't do much maintenance and the silencer is full of spooge. When under full throttle it wants to bog or just shut down like it is getting way to much fuel, oil smoke, the whole deal. Seems to have good bottom end. I am sure it has the stock jetting. Any suggestions?

Could be a broad range of issues. Assuming you have the stock carb, at sea level and 75 degrees, jetting of 145/42 should work well - I would add a new plug.

If you're jetting is ok, it may need a new top end. How many hours on the top end and did the prior owner keep the air filter clean?

He said he kept the air filter clean but by the look of the gearbox fluid I drained out of it I wouldn't bet on it. :whoa: I will rejet the carb to those specs and see how it runs. Kevin B.

If it has the original piston and rings you should consider putting in a wiseco just for peace of mind. I bought a used 99' 220 and the OEM piston shattered on my second ride. Sent it to Fredette Racing for repair...had to split the case to fish out all the piston pieces.

You may want to pull off the silencer and see how it runs. If this guy was running lots of oil in his mix, pipe may be carboned up and silencer may be plugged,it may be choking off the exhaust.
