I bought my '90 yz125 about a year and a half ago and my riding skills have improved extensivley. Now im am beginning to look at newer bikes...(newer for me is 97-00...i dont have a ton of money to blow on this thing..)With jobs coming up soon and making $$ i am planning to begin bike hunting soon. My only question is, stick with the 125, or go with the 250?
- i am 14 years old and weigh about 140-145
-i am about 5'9
-i ride fields, woods, and trails right now, and i go up north with friends sometimes...i plan to start riding some mx tracks, and see where my riding takes me from there.
-i do all my own work on the bike and for the time i have been around dirt bikes i think i am pretty good..i always do routine checks and maintanence.
-after selling my bike i have right now and with other $$ coming in...i might have around $1500-1750 i suppose.

Right now i have a gut instinct to stick with the 125 because i am going to begin riding mx tracks and such...and with no experience i think that would be hard to handle with a 250...But any opinions about how you guys made your transtitions from 125s to 250s would be great and what you think i should do.

Well, I've outgrown it, BUT I do weigh 100 more lbs. or so than you (6' 250). I'm 16, I started riding about a year ago. When I got it, it was plenty of bike for me. 250s really are a whole different monster, my dad has a 99 YZ250, so I can give you input on both. The 250 would be harder for you to maneuver, it is much heavier, and you can tell. It is also pretty finicky with the power, it has a REAL hit towards the middle/top, hell, all over the place.

I'd say for someone your size, you'd have too much trouble handling a 250 to ride MX and woods, and you'd have no fun on tight trails, it would just be too heavy for you. I'd suggest the obvious choice of trying a 250, but I think a 125 is what you want. Also, the bikes have advanced quite a bit since 1990, so they will definitely have some more power than yours does.

If you have any more questions just ask.

lithium. Was your yz125 the first bike you had? (i am just curious because i am thinking of getting a 125 myself and it will be my first bike. I am your age, your weight and 5'11", so im really close to your hight. I just want to know from someone about the same as me.)

For a bike (if you dont mind getting a 4 stroke), a 250f might be something to consider.

Yes, the yz was the first, and is the bike i own.crf i have to say that the yz125 is a very good bike to consider. if you have no 125 experience then it may be intimidating at first, when i bought mine all i had rode was a xr 80! but from the momnet i sunk into the seat and took it for the test drive i was hooked. The suspension on the yz is very plush and easy to handle. At first the bike may seem heavy at first, then you get used to it,then you are comfortable with throwing the bike around a biut. now with less than a year of riding i am already getting the yz airborne and doing wheelies, donuts, etc. The bike feels solid beneath you, and has good mid range power with a kick ass power band. :yeehaw: Also, my yz has held up every bit mechanically, other than routine maintanence. I bought my 125 a little on the older as you may have noticed, because i wanted something i could drop and not worry about it. :) It was definatly worth the 900 i paid for it cause i am having such a blast and it runs so good  my next bike will definatly be another yz because now im hooked. :worship:
As for the 250 4stroke , i love four strokes, but right now im hooked on 2 strokes for alot of reasons. There are alot of things that 4 strokes have to offer that 2 strokes dont, and vice versa. ill keep my options open to 4 strokes though, definatly
