This was the first bike I ever worked on. I picked it up from my buddy's garage where it had been sitting for at least 8 years. It looked as though someone had attempted to change the rear tire and never finished. So all the spacers, axle bolt and rear break arm were gone. As I took a closer look, the oil drain bolt was gone, coil and few other things. I was told it ran before the flat which prompted the rear tire change that was never finished. He said when it ran the transmission was jumping out of gear. So, I bought a manual, tools as I needed and spare parts on **** and got it to run.

I only broke one clutch basket (I tried it by hand, I now use air tools) and spent alot of time reading and rereading a manual. It never really ran great, but good enough for me, it was my first dirt bike and it taught me alot about how a bike works. We named the bike Frankenstein, for all the mixed parts that went in to make it run. I rode it for 2 summers and one winter when the compression dropped. The shock was totally blown and I put it to the side. I was going to sell it when I decided to give it to my brother because I couldn't stand looking at it anymore. He was going to fix it up in Texas, and that was 3 years ago. He brought it back up last winter, along with the 1985 rm250 (before restoration) so we could sell it, but we couldn't part with it. I fixed the 250, now I think its time for the 125

Doug Dubach has A LOT of experience on these bikes. In 1985 he turned down a deal to ride Pro Circuit Honda CR125's to stay on his 1982 Suzuki RM 125.

I raced a 1982 Suzuki RM 125 for 4 Years. It only had The Cylinder Polished (not ported), a Krause Kannon Pipe and an Answer Round Silencer. And it was my favortie bike ever.

Since then I have have owned Matt Maximoffs 1993 "FACTORY" Support Suzuki RM125, A Full On Rodney Smith 1991 Suzuki RM125, and David Pingrees Pro Circuit Racing 1996 Kawasaki KX125 and none of those 125cc bikes was faster then that 1982 Suzuki RM 125.

All the talk about the older bikes brings back alot of memories. I called my brother last night and we scanned through fleebay at the the 70's and 80's bikes we grew up with.

I had a 79 RM250 which really flew! I sold it to buy a YZ465 (can't remember the year). Man, was that thing a handfull! You could roost continuously in any gear!

He bought an RMX250 in about 92 or 93 and I really liked it. First bike with a radiator and really good suspension I had ridden. What a difference todays bikes have in weight and handling compared to the old bikes, you kids today don't know haw good you have it!

The current 97 Cr250R I have is plenty bike for me, but I wish I had that 465 still, what a pisser that thing was!

Have a good Holiday!

1986-19987 Yamaha YZ490's were really good too, they pinged a lot but were bullet proof. I might try to find one of these. Eric Gorr can really make the Engines work on these things, and an FMF Gold Series Pipe does wonders with that Engine work. Ahhhh the good old days. (lol, and I am a young guy).

Them there watercoolers ain't vintage!!!!! Vintage is like pre 75, before the suspension started growing. Imagine trying to ride todays engines, with 3 or 4 inches of travel? That 82 rm you are looking at is pretty much a product of our very own Rich and Eric's crazy ideas! The old air coolers were down on hp, only because of powerloss due to running temperatures. Water usually kept it cool, and exhaust valves gave it bottom end. Bad bores can be restored and even plated/replated! http://www.dirtrider.net/forums3/showthread.php?t=169369
