I have revived an 83 XT550. It came from Arizona, now is in CT. It has 10,000 miles. This bike has remarkable torque when it is running right, however its performance is intermittent.

First there is this hiccup, I mean to say a brief total loss of power. It is a fraction of a second in duration, and occurs from every 5-10 seconds when its cold to a few times a minute when its warmed up good. I have been running with lead additive (for the valves?).

Also the amount of pull seems to vary a little. Sometimes it pulls great and sometimes it pulls ok. It is a noticable obvious change/difference felt.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Check your intake boots. You need to take the carbs right off to do this. Also check for loose wire conections or corroded conections. Also the kick stand has a kill switch , some times it bounces up and down and momentarily kills the engine . It need s a good stiff spring. Hope this helps. Jim
