I am thinking of buying a 1998 yzf400 its in perfect shape, have these bikes been notorious for anything bad? I will be mostly riding this on trails in the desert. Any suggestions would be appreciated
Changing to the 1999 design waterpump seal and shaft is worth doing. The 98 version tended to wear out and leak some. You also have to keep an eye on the counter balancer gear woodruff key. When they wear out it will make a sound you will swear is a rod knock. The seal and the key are easy to change.
You have to clean the accelerator pump chamber regularly to keep it functioning properly, and it's best to replace the diaphragm every couple of years.
Change the cam chain every couple of seasons (easy and cheap $20), change the oil and filter every couple of rides and this bike will be as reliable as the old Honda XRs.
I still have my 1998 YZ400F (now a 50+ horsepower 444) and it's still loads of fun and stone reliable.
