1999 suzuki rm 250

I found a used 1999 rm250 that has no compression and was wondering what is the function of the exhaust valve and could it have anything to do with the bike not having compression? also if it is just the piston and rings how much would it cost if the cylinder needs work and what type of plating is on it?

Ugh. Could be anything from a big hole in the crank case, to a hole in the piston, or broken/worn rings. It is impossible to estimate a cost in this situation. Anywhere from $100 - $600 if the cases are still good and all. It would have to be torn down and inspected in order to know what the problem is.
