I'm 26 years old, 5'8" 165 lbs.
Fairly aggressive personality (almost kill myself snowboarding every weekend), and in pretty good physical shape.
I'm planning on doing mostly trail riding with friends...not going to be racing or hitting huge jumps or anything.
I'm a beginning rider, haven't really riden a dirt bike before.
But I want something I won't grow out of. I'd like this first bike to last several years.
Everyone says at the colorado altitude I should stick to 4 strokes.
I'm getting mixed advice on the size I should get.
Some people are saying a 250 will be plenty, others are saying I'll outgrow that quickly and will want more power.
I'd like to hear some opinions on what size I should be looking at and why. Also if you can recommend any specific models I should check out, that would also help.
Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!!
Thanks,
Dave

You should look at the kdx 200/220 they are awsome bike very reliable and 2 stroke is a plus or a ktm 200exc depending on how much you have to spend

I know a guy with a CRF250 and he loves it. He's a bit of a wimp but he says it's got to much power for him. He takes it out every week for the past couple of months and hasn't had any problems.

Get a 250 2-stroke that's a couple years old. It'll be cheap, make plenty of power, and last way longer than a 250 4-stroke.

For play riding, having fun and cheap maintenance, hard too beat a 2 stroke.. I would definately look at a kdx for trail riding, even a ktm 200 as mentioned above..
As for why, at 5'8, a kdx is lower also, you may feel more confident on it..

If you are aggressive though, go for a yz (or kx OR a rm) 250, you cant beat the maintenance costs of a 2 stroke

I second that, you won't out grow it and they are just cheap fun. I won't ever get rid of mine.

I also vote for the 250 two stroke. Easier and cheaper to maintain. Not to mention buying a used few-years-old 4 stroke can be a money suck.

I am 31 yrs, 5'8, 200 lb, and my first dirt bike is the 04 KX250 my wife bought me for Christmas. It's big, bad, faster than me, and I absolutely love it. This weeks rain here really pissed me off. And in case you need to know, I tip-toe the ground.

my first bike was 02/yz 250 oil burner, wont give it up, I also have an 06 yzf 450, the 250 is the ultimate woods / everything bike. the short term is learning the when the power turns on. The 450 is the real deal on the track....
