2002 DRZ 250 Odometer

hey i recently wiped on my 2002 drz 250. The question I have is that I do not want to put the odometer back on right now. There is a cable that went from the handle bars where the odometer was located to the front wheel. i want to take off the cable but, do I need to put a screw into the hole where I took the cable off by the wheel?
