How many miles before I modify the exhaust system. Or should it be left alone?

One or two should do it. ;)

It should be left alone if:
1. The kdx has too much power to suit in its stock form
2. You stole it, so why spend any money on it (just take it back!)
3. None of the CR80Rs you ride with are modified either, so why bother?

A pipe is generally considered to be the 'biggest bang for the buck' you can get. If there is only one bolt-on thing you're gonna get, a pipe is it.

(Not counting the handful-o-brass you need to rejet your bike. But, you don't count that cuz jets don't 'bolt-on' !)
