2004 Kx 250F Jumpimg out of 5th gear

From What I have been told and what I have read It sounds like I am splitting this case.This will be my first time.What should I have on hand before getting started..And what will I be looking for once I am inside the transmission. I can not afford to take the bike to a shop.

A case splitter makes splitting the cases much easier and safer. Banging them apart with a rubber mallet is a good way to break things.

You're likely to find the engagement dogs rounded off, this seems to be a common problem with that engine.

I know it's not a KX250f, but it's pretty much the same gearbox and same problem.
