Im pretty set on Yamaha right now as that is what I used to ride and it is also the closest/best dealer around. Honda is a close second. So here are my options so far (suggest another if you have an opinion on it)

CR250R
YZ250
YZ426F
YZ450F
CRF450R

1) your physical size (both height and weight are important)- 6'4, 210lbs

2) How physical / aggressive are you? quite physical. work out daily if time allows.

3) what do you plan to ride- MX/SX tracks, woods, fields with friends or ????? whatever i can get my hands on. probably just recreational for now since flying lessons and school take most of my time

4) Do you have any riding experience? yes, rode when i was a kid about 10 years ago

5) Do you think you will race? maybe if i have the time

6) Are you mechanically inclined and will you be doing your own bike work? yes, all of my own work short of rebuilding the motor most likely, unless i have the time to do that as well.

7) Do YOU have a preferance to a brand/ motor choice (2 or 4 stroke)? I used to ride yamaha, but dont know how they are lately. no preference between 2 or 4 really. i know how each works, but dont really know the pros/cons of either.

8) Do you have a dealer close by your home that you might use and what brand(s) does he carry? Yamaha is 5min from me and the guys are cool enough. there is also a honda dealer pretty close. cant find a KTM local unfortunately

9) How much do you plan to spend on a bike? not too much. ill probably buy used to save money. anywhere from $2000-4500

10) anything else that you think would help form an opinion? nothing that i can think of.

2 strokes - more fun (powerband hit), less maintenance, have to keep it "on the pipe", less difficult maintenance, $500 if you blow the motor, lighter.

4 strokes, broader powerband, more torque, easier to ride, more maintenance, more expensive maintenance, $2000+ if you blow the motor, heavier.

I guess you can tell where my loyalties lie . . . ;)
