I'm 16, 155 pounds, 6 feet tall. I'm leaving four wheelers and getting into bikes. I don't have any real experiance on dirtbikes, but I've ridden an XR200R through trails and stuff just fine. Around here, there are like no 125's for sale, which is what I'd rather have. However, there's a vast selection of 250's for sale, alot the time for the same $$$ as a 125. So I'm wondering if a beginner like me will survive on a 250. The bike will probably be like a year 2000 or so. I'm going to be riding on an MX track and trails with it. Are there any years and models that were specifically easy to ride? Or should I just save my hide and get a 125. I'm not learing to ride on the bike I buy, but it will be like the first bike I ride full time, as I said I used to ride 4-wheelers. I have about $2000 to spend by the way.

I rode a modded blaster, it was preety fast, for small quad standards. Maybe as much power as a 125, I don't know, but quads are alot heavier on top of those 2 big rear tires. Wouldn't hold a candle to the 250's roost though. I've heard that the 2001 YZ250 has a nice smooth powerband. I kinda need something smooth so that I'm not scared to ride it. 250's have at least 40 horses don't they?

You could do a 250. I have a friend who is just about your size and he throws his YZ250 around like it's nothing. But on the other hand, I'm 6'2", 260 and my CR250 has been throwing me around. He's also had the YZ for 3 years, I've only had a bike about 2 months. Just go easy, get used to the power and you will be fine. Once you learn the bike and learn to control it and not let it control you, you will be fine. Good luck on whichever you chose.

My 16 year old son has been riding since 5. He now rides a 125 in the woods, and is a very good rider... ( can trophy in the "b" class) He rides my 250 on occasion, but prefers getting back on his 125. "yeah dad, you're bike's ok, but it scares me!" I believe he COULD get use to it, it just takes a lot of respect. Todays 250's (aprox. 46 hp) are only about 5-6 horses short of what the 500 2 strokes used to be... I had an ATK 406 (ugh) back in 89, and while it was torquier than my 250, my 250 is WAY faster.

When I was 16 I had a 750cc streetbike. It wasn't the power that got me in trouble, it was the stupid decisions that I made when I was 16.

Now that I'm 28, I have a piped and jetted KX500 that's probably putting out about 60 horsepower, but I get hurt much more frequently on my bicycle.

So I just gotta think more often than gassing it. If I can find a 125 I'll probably get, but for every 125 being sold, there's like 5 or 6 250's, so I'd have a better chance at getting a better bike.

So I'd be going from a quad with low 30's horsepower to a bike with mid 40's horsepower, it's gonna be a rush, I can't wait.

I would be very careful with a 250cc 2-stroke if I were you! I also left the ATV world and went straight to my current CR250, but I had already had a fair amount of experience riding other's dirtbikes, including a '94 KX250 w/basic mods.

Not only are you getting at least ~45 HP, you are getting it with 1/2 the weight!! A 250cc 2-stroke MXer will flatten just about any quad, including the big cc Raptors, etc. due to the power/weight ratio. It really is nothing like a quad, a 2-stroke MXer is violent!! Give it total respect.
