I currently have a 98 YZ250, but have been thinking of going to a four stroke. I am 5'7" and 200lbs. ride only woods (no track at all) and am a little agressive. I have been battling the vibration issue in my hands and get tired of them going numb all the time. I am not totally using the YZ to its full potential, because I am lugging 2nd gear alot. but it is nice to have that little extra grunt from the bigger engine.. my two buddies that I ride with have 450f and tell me that they barely use 1/4 of the throttle, and they still walk away from me on the trails... I'm not out there to kill myself by trying to keep up with them, so I was thinking would a 250 four stroke be something that would suit my riding style. I know how to do basic maintinance so that I not a problem. just don't want to be disappointed in a year or two with the bike..

I'm similar in build to you, only difference is I prefer the track and have a long (too long to admit) history of MX. As my sig says, I have a RM250 and my son has an 06 250F, when I get off my RM to ride the 250F it is a VERY noticable drop in power. I would never consider that drop in power. The 250f is easy, fun and all the other things you hear about, but it does not have the power my 250 has and there are too many times I want or need that power.

Since you have the two stroke 250, I would look at 4 stroke. However, if you truly are just a woods rider I really don't think you will like it the first time you are an hour in and the bike stalls or dies for whatever reason and you kill yourself trying to restart.

Four strokes are fun and easy, but don't believe all the hype. They are NOT the be all end all the press and mfg's want you to think they are.

Are they really that hard to start?
They can be especially when hot. How tired do you get when you have to kick your bike over 3 or 4 times to start it after riding all day and your hot and tired? Now imagine having to kick that bike 30 times.

4strokes are no fun to kick over when they are hot. my friend always complains about having to kick his 250f over when we have been ridding a long time and we stop for gas.

thanks for the input..I think that I am going to have to waite for a newer bike. so I think that I will do a total engine rebuild on the 250 and see what that does for me. heck the bike is 8 years old and has never had more than a top end rebuild. so I think that i will dig into the engine and replace bearings and suck. also check the gears and shift forks.. maybe a big bore kit!!!... just kidding...

now that I have decided to dig into the engine are there any mods that I might want to think about, being that I will have it apart anyways?? what are some things that you would do if it was your bike.. let's not get crazy, but some basic mods. the engine is totally stock right now..

Basics, pipe, silencer, vforce3 reeds, twin air, clutch rebuild. Those are basic things to start off with. If you wanted to get really nuts you could get it ported. Depending on your plans though, I wouldn't throw any money in it that's isn't necessary and just save the extra. You won't get it back on resale, so rather than spend another 1000 on parts just save that money.

yeah I don't want to throw a ton of money into this bike but would like to do some basic stuff.. I already have a pipe and silencer, but have been looking into reeds. I have no idea what the difference is between them all. so any help would be great. I have no idea what a "twin air" is. also will inspect the clutch, and replace if needed. I have never had a problem with it but that's not to say that it might need replacing soon.. thanks for the input..

Twin air is just an aftermarket air filter that breethes better than stock, only cost about $25. Vforce3 reeds are what I have in my bike and love them, smooth the power out alot. Not sure what is available for a 98 year bike, but reeds will help alot also. After that, you have to get into the motor and I wouldn't do that unless you keep the bike.

Personally, I wouldn't put any money in it beyond maintenance if I planned on selling it.

I plan on selling it probably next year, but I still would like to get a little more out of it. I might just replace just the reeds not the whole cage. what are a good brand to go with..
