4-stroke vs. 2-stroke gas mileage

We all know the basic differences between 2 and 4 strike engines. My question is....... will a 4-stroke motorcycle travel twice as far as a 2-stroke motorcycle using the same amount of fuel?

if not how close would it be.. I'm just curious because I have a 2-stroke now and I'm thinking about getting the yz250f but the tank is so small.

There isn't a generic answer to your question. Jetting, load, riding style will all play into it. All you can do is test it and buy a bigger tank if it's too small, or talk to 250F riders who ride in the same area and see what type of mileage they are getting.

let's talk comparisons - stock MX - RM250 in the woods - 20MPG max - my thumper buddies (200&300) get at least 40MPG. Anyone else?

For comparison, I know "A" riders that go 70+ miles of agressive trail riding on stock tanked KTM300 E/xc's. My '99 CR250 with a 3.2 gallon tank will go 65-75 miles.

I've had to give gas to an RM250 that ran out at 28 miles.

Our buddy with a DRZ400 runs out around 50 miles.

A cleanly jetted two stroke ridden smoothly (a gear high, minimal wheelspin) can get good mileage, even if you are riding fast.

I find that I'll be near empty after about 2.5 hours of good solid riding in an '88 RM250, when my 4 stroke buddies will have only used 1/4-1/2 of a tank.

I get about 45-50 miles of woods riding out of my 2 gallon '99 CR250 tank. Very dependant on throttle usage though. Hard on the throttle all day in sand/mud you're looking at about 30 miles. My brothers mildly modified '95 DR350 get way better fuel economy, but it’s not nearly as fun. It takes chemical energy to make mechanical fun.

I get 34 MPG out of an 86 Xl250R. My friend gets about 50 or so out of a 81 XR200. I generally am harder on the throttle than he is and it makes a big difference.

Same old dude (me that is) on a 23 y.o. 400cc mx'r (2st): :scream: :scream:

Well it doesnt really get horrible milage if you baby it.......but how many people want to baby an open class 2-smoke?? eh?? :cool:
