My best friend, who isnt a member?, asked me to post this question here about his bike. He has a 99 yz400f, this winter, he did complete teardown, and with assistance of a friend, installed a new top end. He had problems, eventually took to a shop, since timing was off, valve was bent, also, he was charged to have timing chain replaced. He knows the chain was damaged for it is visible. The mechanic advised him that these chains do tend to wear out. He isnt sure if that is the case or maybe it was from his own proper installation the first time. or from wear over time.
* cut to the chase,
"Is it common for the timing chain to wear out over moderate usage, not in races, on the YZF? if so, is it because of it being a double cam?"
Just asking the ?'s.. if more info is needed to enlighten him, let me know and I will get the answers. I know an obvious answer can't be determined even with inspection of the chain, just wondering if anyone else had to replace their timing chain when doing their first top end.... thanks for any info....

If he installed the chain and cams with incorrect timing (off by a tooth or two in the wrong direction), then this could have caused the valve to hit the piston, and the jolt could have damaged the timing chain.

All lot of different things can happen when a four stroke newbie does a top end, so it's hard to tell for sure. Maybe he should join DRN and relate first hand the sequence of events?
