85 xr200r midrange hesitation

when you get on the gas, it will sputter a little in the midrange. it has a supertrapp pipe on it and i have not checked the plug or carbs yet. my friend just bought it tonight and im helping him get it running right. does this sound like its lean? im gonna look at the plug tomorrow and clean the carbs. any help is appreciated.

i havent cleaned the carbs yet, but i checked the plug and its a dark brown with some black. this makes me think its running rich, so i take out the filter and its covered in black nastyness! so i try cleaning it and it starts to fall apart. i tried it up the road without the filter and it runs great without it. im going have him get a new filter and see how it runs.

You could try the clip on the needle moving it up so it cuts off fuel it is is too rich or move it down a notch so that it feeds more fuel. Hope it helps out if the filter doesn't.
