Hey guys,
Ist timer here. I have an 86 IT 200 and just completed a top end rebuild. the bike ran fine before the rebuild (except the oil burn) however now, it is getting a very weak spark. This was discovered after cranking for first time. It would wander at idle, and would start to break out in mid range and top end throttle. All of this finished with a backfire thru the tail pipe. All of that sounded like timing, except for the weak spark... I have cleaned the connections, checked grounding, incl. coil, Anyone have any experience with this?

I had a similar problem once, turned out the spark plug cap was faulty, but I'm suspecting you might have an air leak. A leak down test on the top end would be the best way to check for that. Click here for leakdown test thread

Also measuring the resistance of primary, secondary and stator coils would be wise. Good luck!! That should be a fun ride when running good.

Thanks for the tips. Didn't concider the cap. Will also check the leak down. I really like this bike, look forward to it's return!! I'll follow up with post results. Thanks.
