My buddies boss has a 86 RM250 in his garage. This thing looks like it is brand new. He is the original owner since new and said he rarely ever rode it and he wants to get back into riding some. basically just cruisin the trails. He said he would give me money to get it running. Heres the deal, the bike sat for so long it the garage that the air filter dried out and started to crumble away. Well about a month ago he tried to start it and apparently when he kicked it over it fired right up but died about 30sec later. After removing the seat he noticed that some of his air filter got sucked through the carb and such. What can i do to get this thing back and running. How can i make sure there is nothing left in the bottom end or wherever the pieces went? Thanx

The airfilter crumbs shouldn't hurt anything in the bottom or top end, assuming they are only foam. I would definately take apart the carb and fuel lines and clean them out really well.

As studboy said, take out the carb and clean it, replace the fuel lines as they are probably dry rotted, new air filter, drain the gas tank and clean it out, change the tranny oil, new spark plug, freshly mixed fuel and it should be good to run. I would probably replace the break fluid as well. I'm sure there are other things too so hopefully someone else has some ideas.

let me understand...he's paying you to fix it - and you're asking us how to fix it? How much of a cut are we getting???

lol, I am doing his top end also, but I was just more concerned about the air filter thing. I planned on doing everything that was mentioned but I just wasn't sure about the air filter pieces getting into the bottom end. When I saw this bike I could not believe how nice it was for its year. It has about 20hrs on it total. The top end is actually alright but he wants that done just to be on the safe side.

Yeah, you are on the right track then - I wouldn't be overly worried about it - clean the whole intake while you are there and you should be able to see what the bottom looks like while the jug is off.
