91 CR250 stripped oil threads

Okay, so I drained the oil on my dads bike about 4 months ago to bring the bike back up to running condition since it's been sitting for 6 or more years.

My dumb ass stripped out the oil drain plug threads. :bang: so now I had two options. Split the cases or get a 12mm healy coil and try to re-due the threads. My dad found out and started to fix the crack in the case which worked, now we are trying to figure out how to put a new thread in with out getting shavings into the cases and what tools to use.


Anyone who as done this before give me any advice on tools to fix this?

Get a Heli-coil kit from your local industrial hardware store or online. When you tap the hole, grease the tap. This will catch most of the shavings. You can also remove the oil filler cap for the gearbox and blow a little compressed air in there while you are tapping the hole. This will blow the shavings out as you are tapping.

The kits come with a tap, several heli-coils and an installation tool. Several auto parts stores carry then now. You could also check the motorcycle shops in your area to see if they install heli-coils. Most shops do and it may be less expensive to have one installed rather than buying a whole kit.

Be sure to get a new drain plug washer.

I did the same thing years ago. got a XR drain bolt, (they are bigger) got a tap the same size as the bolt. Then Bought a drill bit, drill and tap your done. Run fresh oil a few times through the engine, your done! Fill it back up with oil, go racing!!!
