For the Reno Ride, we borrowed my brother-in-law's truck & towed a heavy duty 5x10 utility trailer w/ 2 bikes, gear etc. It has roughly 150k miles on it, tranny is fine. But in the mountains, we struggled to hold 60 mph on the climbs, and barely held 55 on the steepest inclines.

Does this sound right? I expected a lot more torque. Right before we left, he changed the oil/filter & fuel filter and ran a tank of fuel treatment. The air filter was clean. Any ideas?

He's thinking of taking the injectors out & having them cleaned, but what else can we do? He has moderate mechanical skills (FAA certified Airframe & Pwerplant mechanic).

A 92 is not a powerstroke. It is a non turbo 7.3 and don't have the power of a powerstroke. We had a 93 with same motor and it was the same way. We now have a 2000 Powerstroke and it will run circles around our old one.

Good call motogrl, the 92 is a non direct injected, non turbo, diesel. It's one of the gurgly sounding 7.3 engines. It's a great engine that will serve well but it's not as efficient or powerful as today's IH powerstrokes.

You can make your 92 have nearly the power of a powerstroke by adding the turbo kit offered a few years later. The turbo kit/option was made for ford by banks and is still available from the banks people. Turbo is the way to go on a diesel.
