I just got a bike from a guy who said it was a '98 rm250 but he had lost the title. So, I ordered a piston+ gasket kit for a '98 and when they arrived I sent the piston along with the cylinder to US chrome to be replated. This morning I got the serial# from the frame and it is infact a 1996 model. I know the gasket kit might not work but will the cylinder and piston be alright seeing it is going to be replated according to the new piston I sent them or should I get the right piston and call US chrome and let them know it is not a 1998 it wont be there until this Friday. :|

according to my parts books, the bore was the same but wiseco piston # is different (says flat top, double ring)...although I thought most stuff fit the 96-98 (i have the 96).

Did you say anything to the guy you bought it from? I would be pissed if I got a bike that was 2 yrs older than what I thought I was buying. Just to make sure, what is the 10th digit in the VIN? Indeed the 98 had a flat top, i would not ride with that piston in a 96. The rings should still be the same along with everything else but the piston needs to be switched to the domed one. With a flat top you may get more compression but I dont think its good for the bike. Just my thought

I only paid 1100 for it and it was running pretty well when i got it. compression was a little weak but besides that its pretty nice. i checked some measurements and most clearances are the same but the exhaust valve closes at a lower compression something like 9.8:1 in the 96 and 10.3:1 in the 98.
