If you bought the bike used more than likely is already been removed. New the bike came with a lid over the air filter.[/QUOTe
My used 97 220 did not have a lid on the filter box when I bought it. I've read that some guys replace the lid with a stocking (panty hose,I guess) to keep the dirt out. I don't know if this is a good idea. From what I understand, not having the lid on helps the bike breathe, and the only danger in not using it , is waterlogging the bike in deep water. Sooo.....if you need a snorkle,so does your bike.

As one who has sunk his (running) KDX200 in water over the seat, I can tell you that water deep enough to be ingested into a topless airbox is deep enough to go right into an airbox WITH a top.
I believe the top is a noise-redution step more than anything.
