It gets fuzzy--

my memory that is. :silly:

I seem to recall back in 95 or 96 when the top riders boycotted Las Vegas because of unsafe conditions and lousy purses.

Anybody remember what that was all about?

This whole AMA -vs- Pace/CCE deal has been simmering for quite awhile.

Wasn't that the time that the stadium lights failed?

BigR,

It works like this: The FIM is the umbrella sanctioning body which most of the individual national federations fall under. The AMA is the U.S. federation, Australia's is Motorcycling Australia, the Brits have the ACU, France has the Fédération Française de Motocyclisme. You can go to this link to look up the national federations: http://www.fim.ch/en/

Now, when the World GP MX round is in Britain, the British federation, ACU, is prohibited from promoting a competing national event on the same dates. Same thing happened in this country when the World GP MX had rounds in this country, there wasn't a competing AMA national on the same weekend.

So, the theory is that if the FIM sanctions all of the CCE rounds as World SX rounds, then the AMA as a member Federation would be required to aid the FIM in promoting those rounds and not competing on the same dates.

Now, there have been a few press releases in the last couple of days that are posted on Cycle News which apply directly to this situation. There is one quote from the AMA that acknowledges that this will be a very troublesome development if it actually comes to pass. Even more interesting is the fact that the deal between AMA and JAM is not a done deal and the letter of intent had to be extended to keep things rolling for both parties.

Stretch374 called the Chevy trucks sponsorship correctly. That's also in the press releases.

What you have posted is "Mostly" true. The AMA is Not Required to abide by the FIM rules, but have "Agreed" to. They (the AMA And the FIM) have Also "Agreed" that "IF" there were to be an "FIM" race here in the "US" the "AMA" would "Preside" as the "Sanctioning" body.
So, if the FIM does Sanction the "US" Supercross races here in the US, the Sanctioning Body will ultimately be done by "AMA" officials.
The Plot Thickens!
