Just swithced premix oils from Maxima Super M (Synthetic Blend) to Amsoil Interceptor (Full Synthetic). Running at 36:1 and smoking pretty bad. When I first made the switch it was spooging so bad that as I ripped the throttle, it would spray the driveway (it spooged before but didn't spray). Ran it about 10 miles and no spraying or dripping. I think theAmsoil has helped clean out the system a litttle. Keeping things clean is one of the things they boast. Anyway, I've been reading like crazy about rejetting and taking in everyones ideas about jetting. I decided to give Fredette a call and what do you know I got in touch with him. I wanted his input on what Canadian Dave was saying about jetting. First thing Jeff asked me was what oil and what ratio it reccomends. Amsoil calls for 50:1. Jeff said to run it at that first before rejetting. Thought that interesting to clear up spooge when what I've been reading says spooge is unburnt fuel. Thoughts, comments, derragatory remarks? Anyone? I'm a little leary of going 50:1 when Kawasaki calls for 32:1.
2 things:
-Amsoil Interceptor is ok to run at 50:1, I would however switch to Amsoil Dominator, as it is more applicable to your use (so sez the Amsoil book)
-no matter what you run it at, you have to jet for it. To adjust oil/gas ratios to compensate for spooge is ill advised.
I've been running Interceptor @40:1 for about a year. Very happy with performance and lack of spooge and smoke. I would go 50:1 with no reservations ,but run other machines, all on the same premix, this has been a good compromise. Jim G
Wolf, what do you mean the book says Dominator is for my application? It is for a modded bike for racing. Greg (my distributor) said the same thing and that's why I bought Interceptor instead. I don't have a modded bike and I don't race except for a few Harescrambles. Funny thing about these premix oils, Amsoil says 50:1 only, I even called them and they said, 'yup that's right', even though the KDX manual says 32:1. Yet Maxima Super M's container says to mix anywhere from 20:1 to 50:1 for your particular machine. It's obvious that Amsoil is saying that their oil is better by those recommendations.
Don't get me wrong, I have run the Interceptor and liked it, really no good reason to switch, other than according to AMSOIL the Interceptor is designed more for snowmobiles, oil injection...
If you like it, stay with it, I don't think it really matters a whole lot.
The Amsoil oil recommendation sheet indicates Interceptor is for dirt bikes whether injector or premix. Rates it as "Excellent". This rating has not changed since Interceptor came out.
Amsoil Dominator is rated as "Racing" with a subnote - "Excellent for racing or modified motors. Very good for recreational use". It was originally rated as "Very good" for motorcycles with a subnote which indicated something to the effect 'that it was suitable for engines which are frequently tore down.' The recommendation sheet has changed!
I use Interceptor in my snowmachines with oil injection and the Dominator for my bikes. I really like how clean my power valves stay with the Interceptor oil. The only reason I don't use Interceptor with my dirt bikes premix is that it does not have a color dye in it. We run both four and two cycle bikes and I don't want straight gas to be added by mistake to one of the bikes.
