this is a cool idea. yesterday i watched the 1986 race with bailey and johnson, on line , and now i realise how much faster the pros are now. the track design to me was terrible. does anyone else have an opinion on using the original 1986 track design for anaheim 2? to me, it looks dangerous, and it is a totally different track than any of the new pros have ever raced on. never the less it should be a fun time with all the nestalgia stuff going on with the race and all the old pros in attendance.

Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, announced today that the second round of Anaheim (January 19) will serve as Throwback night dedicating the race as a retro salute to the legendary '80's racing that helped establish the beginning of a new era in supercross.

The Throwback night will feature a replica of the 1986 Anaheim track celebrating the epic battle between Honda riders David Bailey and Rick Johnson. In what is considered the greatest supercross race of all-time, Bailey went on to win the race and Johnson captured the championship that year.

Anaheim holds a special place in Bailey's heart not only for hosting the greatest race of all time.

"Most people remember the 1986 race between me and Rick Johnson, but my greatest experience was my first race there in 1983," said Bailey. "I was trailing the leader, Broc Glover, in the main event with goose bumps because I knew I was going to finish at least second. Then Broc made a huge mistake in the whoops, and I took over the lead! He made an incredible save, and I thought briefly that he might pass me back, but a lap later, he seemed to settle for second, and I was all alone out front. Those were the happiest laps of my career!"

"We based the Anaheim retro design on the 1986 Anaheim track for a few reasons," said Dave Prater, director of supercross, Live Nation Motor Sports, Inc. "First, 1986 is recognized as the beginning of the modern era of supercross. The Production Rule was adopted in '86 and has stood the test of 20+ years. Finally, the race is seen by many to be the greatest supercross race of all time that featured Bailey and Johnson."

To show support for the race, many teams and riders will be outfitted with gear and bikes that that have an '80's retro theme. Former AMA Supercross class champions Bailey and Johnson are working closely with Live Nation Motor Sports, Inc., to help capture the nostalgic '80's look and feel. The factory teams will display the '80's works bikes that help pilot the era's top racers to championships.

"I'm really excited about the retro theme at the second Anaheim event," said Mike Fisher, team manager, Monster Kawasaki. "The 1980s is where supercross really started to build to what it is today. The tracks were a lot different back then. They were slower and we've made a lot of safety innovations so combining the new with the old should make for a great race. I know the whole Monster Energy Kawasaki team will be ready to turn back the clock and win like we did when Jeff Ward was on our bike."

In addition, former legends Mike Kiedrowski, Mickey Dymond, Mike Bell, Marty Smith, Jeff Ward, Sebastien Tortelli, Jeff Stanton, Mike LaRocco, Jeremy McGrath, Ricky Carmichael, Guy Cooper, Ron Lechien, Donnie Hanson, Broc Glover, Rick Johnson, David Bailey, Erik Kehoe Jim Holley and Johnny O'Mara will be on hand to sign autographs as part of the Throwback night festivities.

Fans are encouraged to dress the part for the evening and to get behind this fun, and potentially legendary race event. From the variety of on-site, '80s-themed promotions to the '80's music and videos, Throwback night will capture the essence of that special era of supercross racing.

That will be interesting. Back then the tracks were really rough and the same section would have different obstacles depending on which line you picked. Today's tracks are more speed and spectator oriented. I'm not even sure if they had triples.

A cool idea I suppose, but different paint and stickers on todays bikes doesn't make it retro in my book. Bailey, Johnson, Glover, O'Mara, Ward.........were front runners, as they would be even today, on today's bikes. TRUE bikes of that era, and that era's track, facing the same challenges as back then, with TODAY's riders... that's a race.
This sounds like $ to me. Not to diss Mr Bailey at all, he was picture-perfect.

Wow, just watched the '86 Anaheim supercross, what a great race.

Its going to be very interesting to see todays riders with todays bikes on that very technical track. They may be wishing they had a 2-stroke. I'm curious to see if they build it exactly the same, being that tight.
I found it funny in the video with the quad race and Hannah talking about how safe they are for the whole family. :coocoo:

They got to do something, just watched Arizona and almost fell asleep while it was on. No matter what they do the same guys will be up front, so they might as well make it exciting by trying something new each week with the track. Here are a few ideas I got.

1. All flat turns NO BERMS.

2. At LEAST 1 mud pit to cross (logs in the bottom are optional)

3. All whoops will be made by blindfolding the Cat operator.

4. Dead Engine Start.

This may hold me over till they start Outdoors.

Let's have a real throwback race and make it all 2 strokes for the night
ditto.
Hey Zook250, todays riders are only going faster because of track design and so forth. True todays bikes, equipment, training / nutrition, and knowledge is better but as far as speed and talent go, the guys of 86 had the talent for sure. When you breast feed a child on mx (RC, JS) of course their talent level is giong to skyrocket and bring things to a new level. Its hard to compare speed on a track from two different eras.

Here's a little photo preview of things to come:

It looks like everyone is getting in on the fun.

Looks like Stewart went back a decade too far lol. Erin Bates is looking good ;) Ferry's gear looks more like early '90s. Sucks that RC and MC aren't making their hot laps on 2 strokes. :bang:

I'm not sure I saw live wire correctly as I logged on at the end of practice but did CR have the fastest lap time?

UH OH!! This just in from RacerX:
More on Stewart's Injury

Team Kawasaki just held a press conference announcing Stewart's decision to pull out of this weekend's race. The injury is to his left knee, the same one he hurt at Washougal. He originally reinjured it Dec. 20, and then aggravated it further at Anaheim 1 and Phoenix. He's been in pain this week but held out hope that he'd be able to line up tonight at Anaheim 2, but he's decided that it's just not possible. He's sitting out with the hopes that he'll be ready to go next weekend in San Francisco, thus minimizing his points loss to 25.

Man that sucks! I was looking forward to JS and CR battling on this track. I think that basically hands the title to Reed as long as he doesn't miss a race or screw up really bad. :bang:

Well if that don't hand him the title then this will:

From RacerX:
Even More on Stewart

We just got a call from Jason Weigandt, and he's reporting that James Stewart closed the press conference saying, "The next time you see me will likely be Glen Helen." More later....

Wow. Carmichael's already given Reed one. It would be fabulous if he came out of retirement to challenge. Fantsy land...
