Susan, I'll let Karl keep the flying W act for himself!!! :)

Cactusreid, I forgot about what a bear my old KLX300 was to start when it was hot or dumped or both. I know when I tried out the CRF450R earlier this year, I could understand wanting estart after the third stall on Oops I Crapped My Pants Hill. I also really missed my barkbusters on that bike, nothing worse than stalling on a hill because the shrubbery reached out & grabbed the front brake for ya!

What a pain to keep the bike from sliding backwards, hold the front brake, hold the little hot start lever and kick and kick and kick and kick. My CR is one good kick and off we go.

RockyRoads, congratulations on the new (soon to arrive) bike! I want a spin on the 450X too!!!! I liked the 450R but it was completely stock and weighed a bit less than my 500. By the time we put all the addons on it, I don't think it would be much of an improvement over my 500. The 450X looks interesting but, I'm pretty fond of my 500 plus, I'm cheap and like old stuff.

Well I' don't really belong in here but I'll throw out some opinion. The XR400 wouldn't be my first choice because they feel tall and heavy and can be a chore to start, even for me at 5'-11" and 205# it took a serious stab on the kick starter. That was partly why I built up an XR250, not the lightest but close enough, not the most powerful but that's easily fixed, not the highest tech but that can be a good thing in Baja or out in the back of 1,000 acre riding area. The new tech bike are cool and I'd sure like to have one of the "X" bikes in my trailer but only in addition, NOT in place of the XR284. MEGA tractable in nasty tight stuff yet the 6 speed allows for plenty of top end, not too much maintenance required and should be reasonably easy to fix if something breaks a long way from anyplace. Check out EZ2Endo's (Chet Jones) articles on justxr.com and it might give you some good ideas.
