Are all pipes created equal? Suzuki PE175

I really need a new pipe and muffler for my newly acquired money pit, a 1981 PE175. The pipe is so beat up from rocks it has a hole in the bottom, won't fit tightly in the exhaust port and is smashed in by about half in some parts creating restriction.
So I need a pipe and muffler. Can I use one intended for another bike? Is there an after market company that makes one that will fit?
As a last resort, is it possible to cut a section out of another pipe and weld into the damaged section on my pipe?

Then I need a muffler. The guts are coming out the back of it and it does not muffler very well. The OD on the pipe at the muffler is 1 1/8" AKA 29mm.
Any help would be appreciated.

There's a Suzuki PE users group on Yahoo. The guys really know PE's, so check it out. They should be able to answer your question, and they may even have one for purchase.
