Sorry if this is a repost but had to share this AWESOME story!!!

vid link at bottom.

GREECE, N.Y. Feb 24, 2006 (AP)— Jason McElwain had done everything he was asked to do for the Greece Athena High School basketball team keep the stats, run the clock, hand out water bottles.

That all changed last week for the team manager in the final home game of the season. The 17-year-old senior, who is autistic and usually sits on the bench in a white shirt and black tie, put on a uniform and entered the game with his team way ahead.

McElwain proceeded to hit six 3-point shots, finished with 20 points and was carried off the court on his teammates' shoulders.

"I ended my career on the right note," he told The Associated Press by phone Thursday. "I was really hotter than a pistol!"

In recent days, McElwain's phone has hardly stopped ringing. When his family went out for a meal, he was mobbed by well-wishers. A neighborhood boy came by to get a basketball autographed.

McElwain, 5-foot-6, was considered too small to make the junior varsity, so he signed on as team manager. He took up the same role with the varsity, doing anything to stay near the sport he loves. Coach Jim Johnson was impressed with his dedication, and thought about suiting up McElwain for the home finale.

His performance was jaw-dropping: 20 points in four minutes, making 6-of-10 3-point shots. The crowd went wild.

"It was as touching as any moment I have ever had in sports," Johnson told the Daily Messenger of Canandaigua.

McElwain didn't begin speaking until he was 5. He lacked social skills but things got easier as he got older. He found many friends and made his way through school in this Rochester suburb, although many of his classes were limited to a half-dozen students. And he found basketball.

On the varsity, he never misses practice and is a jack-of-all-trades.

"And he is happy to do it," Johnson said. "He is such a great help and is well-liked by everyone on the team."

Even though McElwain was in uniform for the Feb. 15 game, there was no guarantee he would play Athena was battling for a division title.

I love that for two reasons...

1) It is every average athlete's dream to get the call, go in and score at will!

2) I did not make my basketball team for JV... I managed the Varsity squad instead. Being a part of Basketball was my favorite time of High School My best friend was the starting point guard and 2 years ahead of me. I also managed the Varsity and JV squad my Junior year. I could not get enough of it.

Then my Senior year the coach selected me for the team. I even got to start one game when our starting forward was disciplined.

I did not score much but I did lead the team in drawing charges. I played in one game for a little over 2 minutes and drew 6 charges! I was 6' and 125lbs or so and as soon as I felt contact I pushed slightly off the balls of my feet and the contact would send my light ass flying (I'm a fat ass now at close to 100lbs heavier). The refs eyes would get big and the hand would go behind the head as the whistle blew.

Several times right before the half, coach wanted the ball back so he put me in at center and I would draw the charge and we would get the last shot of the half.

Anyway... watching that kid shoot the lights out made me feel great and when he hit the shot at the buzzer I was jumping up and down for joy with tears in my eyes! I am so happy for him.

One last story...

In college, my second year, I was was the sports editor of my school paper and knew all the players. During the summer before they were officially allowed to practice with the team they would have pickup games in the regular gym.

Now this was a Junior College so we had some really good players. One guy went on to Wake Forest and finished 2nd in rebounding to Sharone Wright in the ACC. Another went on to start at NC State and had a Monster dunk on Eric Montross in one game.

Anyway... I got to play one day during the summer and I would always hit my open shots (I used to be able to shoot) but this time I was coming down on the break. I saw Donnie coming up to me so I wrapped the ball around my back (ala Pistol Pete) and then Derrick came up with his long arms to block my shot but I had jumped and he was on my right so I used the rim and lofted it up with my left hand.

The bike hit the backboard perfectly and dropped in.

Everyone died because they thought I was toast.

Next play on defense Donnie dunks on me. Then Derrick dunks on me. Then a 5'3" guy who wasn't even part of the college dunked on me (the guy had major hops but couldn't shoot to save his life).

Man... this kids story has brought back some great memories.

Isn't that what sport is about? Isn't that why we love it?

Re-living the moment. Dreaming. Just pure... pure everything!

I never knew you could jump your bike that high :boss:
I saw the story on the news this morning and I really wonder if the coach is saying to himself "maybe I should have given that kid a chance earlier in the season"
It is great when a kid so exceeds what everybody thinks they are capable of like he did- just wish he wouldn't have been pigeon holed so early and would have had the chance to prove or disprove himself
