just picked up my new 02 cr250, and went for a rip. it's been since the early 90's since i rode. all i have to say is WOW! i feel like a kid again. the new bikes are great. what's up with the rubber chain though? i rode pretty hard and my arms didn't pump;) it's pretty exciting to be looking at all the moto-mags again and giving the ol christmas list to the wife, all moto stuff of course. almost bought a raptor, but the thing tried to kill me, those damn things are evil.. well, i'll stop babbling. i'm just pumped up:confused: now i have to justify buying the asterisks, i've previously (1990)injured a knee(twisting), but i don't have the cash flow:(

re-entering sport

i quit riding in 85 and bought a used bike to race vet last year and just picked up a crf450 and i know exactly what you mean.i havent had this much fun since i was a kid,im not riding as well as i would like but i did pull 3 holeshots in district races last year and im hoping with the new bike i could hold the lead for more than a few corners.the best part about racing at 39 rather than 16 is i can afford all the trick stuff i dont really need

Yep - I also took a 10 year break!! Used to have a 1985 CR125 which I rode until 1991.

I bought a 1995 KX250 (for many people - outdated; for me - a modern technological marvel with more power than I can handle!) a few months back. It really is like being a kid again.

Yep, me too! Quit in '89. Bike got stolen and then I got married. Well, I finally revisited the sport this year in January when my wife bought me a 2001 KX250. Ahhh, it's good to be back, isn't it! I forgot what used to hurt. Returning to riding this year, at 30, has certainly reminded me of all my ailments. But enduring the physical pains and aches is far more bearable than not riding for 10-12 years. I hope that never happens again!

glad to hear i'm not the only 10yr slacker.. i think i even enjoy it more now then i did back in the day. i no longer have to be in the hold 'er pinned till i get hurt mode, just to beat a buddy. on my snowmobile it's a different story though, hold it open and pray. i guess we can say we are somewhat old school, before this moto got so trendy. i busted a young poser talking smack about all his race wins, i asked him what district he raced in-- he says, district? naw man i race in minnesota. then i ask what is his favorite tracks, he says the usual millville, then drew a blank. lol.

I took a 20 year break... my last bike was 82' YZ80... I just got my new bike in January... and man am I having the time of my life...

BUGGYDAKER: Find the money to buy the knee braces!!! Put it on the Christmas list... even if thats all you get... surgury is much more expensive... and PAINful!!!

I have the EVS-RS6 and I can honestly say they have saved my knees about two times... me and my two buddys that ride with me are selling the ones we have and we just ordered the new Asterisks Cell. Much better support. Both my knees are all bruced up right now because of the lack of protection over the knees on the EVS's. The CELLS have great protection that surrounds the entire area

DON'T COUNT ON CHANCE... PROTECT YOURSELF PLEASE!!!

I took about a 20-yr break. (1982 until August 0f 2001). Went from a CR 125 to a 2001 XR 250R. Tried to race cars for awhile,but that is too expensive and time consuming. Two wheels is my first love, anyway!

i hear ya about the car racing stuff. i've raced karts since i was a little one, and shifters the last seven years. and did a little ff2000. i buy this dirt bike and all i see is back tires, at 60 bucks a pop, a few air filters, and pistons. very cheap MOTORIZED sport. i'm still going to race shifters but at a limited basis.

I just brought my shifter car home. I had it stored away for a year and now im doing a major restoration on it. Im sending my motor to eric-gore for a rebuild and some. Should be done with it in a couple of months. A buddy of ours just built a track... can't wait. Its a KX125 shirter with vented front and rear disc brakes... its a cool little machine.

Is a 5 year layoff accepted?

With a layoff of just over 5 years i measure up somewhat shorter than you guys! I last rode in 1996 and since then ive fitted in two degree's, getting married and moving to san diego from england! (not to mention numerous lost hours, blood sweat and tears fixing up my old VW golf so i can get to work) Ive just got promoted, so i am waiting for the first paycheck to go and buy a new bike and truck. (maybe the credit / financing people will enjoy this even more than me!) Its a very far cry from arriving in america two years ago with just 4 suitcases. I see a lot has changed since then, and its looking like i will be the owner of a yamaha for the first time. I think a late model YZ250 will be a far cry from my old 88 CR250!

Whats the deal with these knee braces, how much do they cost? which are the best ones?

hey that's great. they are alot of fun. I actually race for a team so it's not technically mine-- I race a trackmagic with '99 honda power, the best combo, imo. the trackmagic chassis is beautiful. what chassis do you have? i haven't seen a kawi on a shifter for a long while. my motor guy makes that honda rip. makes my cr250 feel slow:-( that's awesome that your buddy laid down some asphalt for you, i'd kill for a personal practice track. well, if you need any advice-- feel free..btw, if you are going to race you might want to look into a honda.

Well to tell you the truth I am very new to the kart sport. My brother and I bought this kart a little over a year ago... I drove it 2 times... and that was it. The problem is that the kart was on the main land in Cancun and I live in Cozumel, so its a pain to get back and forth. We were actually selling it back to the same guy who sold it to us because the poor thing was never being used... but all of a sudden my friend built this track and I put a QUICK halt on the sale and ferried it over to the island (the rock), by the way thats what my username stands for "The Rock", my description of this island. Its actally the tip of an old valcano:scream:

Anyways I tore it down to the bones, repainting the frame and plastics and so on (yamaha blue by the way), it was red. I really wish I new the history of this chassis and so forth... I really dont know. Kawi might have made the chassis.

I am going to get a hold of the guys who sells them this week and get the real specs. Thanks for the offer on the advise.

There is not enough people here with them to race... it will be just for fun. In fact Im the only person with a shifter here. The guy building the track will have a bunch of rent type karts, small 4-strokes. But hopefully another friend of mine is also going to buy a shifter and we will be able to do some fun rounds.

When the kart is done Ill get some pics so you can see it...

250 motor on a kart must be awsome... I can't imagine my YZ motor on this kart... that would be a rush ... :scream: maybe Ill thow a 250 motor in it some day.

What part of San Diego? Thats were I grew up, southern SD.
These knee braces will save you from hyper-extending your joint, or braking your knee sideways... of course anything is still possible but it would be VERY hard to. For instance the EVS's have titanium hinges that lock at your knees full extention and will not go further.

it sounds like you might have a birel chassis, look on the tube behind the seat that runs from your rear brake at an angle over to the motor. make sense? there should be a welded on plate with some numbers stamped on it. what does this say? and as far as the 250 goes i wouldn't bother, unless you put on new rubber everyday, you'll never get it to hook up. there is a 250 class and our 125's kill them on sprint tracks. we are getting over 40 hp out of our 125's and can put most of it down to the track. the 250 just have a hard time putting all that torque down. on a long track though they are absolute rockets. a 'proper' 250 can go 160mph +!!! versus 120mph of our 125's. we just don't have enough torque to push the air..

Is see what you mean about the 250. Our main land track will probably handle the 125 top speed... but never the 250. Sounds like the 125 will be good.

you my friend are the proud owner of a Tony Kart. someone else must of painted it cause they are always green. i cant tell the model though. probably a formula 125. tonys are very nice chassis. is there a crossbar between the two front spindles? and does the rear bumper come up at a 45degree angle.

Well that was great news. Im glad to hear its a decent machine.

Just about 3 hours ago I took the chassi to get painted. Im trying to remember if there is a crossbar between the spindles.... cant quite remember. But yes on the rear end. That 45 degree angle comes off as one piece.

formula 125?

I was told that the car goes for around $5,500 new. We paid $3,000 for it a year ago.

25+ years here

Man the last bike I owned was a Hodaka Combat Wombat (early 70s). Now, how many of you youngsters remeber seeing one of those? Thank god my kids wanted to start dirt riding. That way I have a reason to get a new bike and ride. After all think about it? You cant keep an eye on the kids without having a bike to show them how! At least that excuse worked on the wife she took it hook line and sinker. Only difreences between riding when your young than when your older is that:
1) You can usually tend to afford having a new bike every few years.
2) You buy the riding equipment that you couldnt afford then.
3) It hurts more and takes longer to heal when you fall now.

Other than that its great riding again, except the youngans keep thinking they can smoke their dad.
