im twelve and pretty good for my age and i just got a CR85RE and it's awesome and plenty fast. i reccomend it for him, or some other big wheel 85. there awesome. and unless he's pretty tall for his age he wouldnt even fit on a 125. im 5 foot 2-3 and i cant even touch the ground on a 125, and besides the big wheel 85s are awesome. good luck

The yz 85 is plenty power ful. but if hes not tall enough for a cr 85 expert then a cr85 regular would be good. or the yz 85.

he's way to short for a 125. like i said im 5,2-3 and i cant even touch on a 125 and i tippy toe on the 85 big wheel so the big wheel 85 is perfect for me. for your bro id suggest a regular 85 or a big wheel. if he wants something to grow into then a big whell. he could probably fit. good luck. :)

IMO, the biggest difference is that the KX and RMs have a power valve for the exhaust. That helps smooth out power delivery. Other than that, you'd have to be a verrrry serious rider to notice any difference.

im about 5,5 to 5,6 and i ride a kx 100 its got enough power to keep up with a 250 so look in to that and if you want a used one they are pretty cheap in good condition plus they love to rev

my little bro. has a mod. kx85, hands down the best 85 ive ever ridden. ( ive ridden a 04' cr85 with several mods and a 03' yz85 with many mods. this kx85 is only an 01'. it beat the cr85 everywhere and beat the yz at low-end, but only beat it on top by a little. im not some 6'4'' 200lbs. guy telling you which 85 to get. ill be 14 y/o next month( Aug. 23), im 5'5'' and 110lbs. im buying a 07' KX250F in 1-3 weeks on top of my mod. 00' KX125( just goes to show you how experienced i am). i would definetly look into buying a kx85. if you choose to buy used, look on cycletrader.com. the kx is a good bit less expensive than the cr,yz, or sx85's. about as expensive as an rm. but have fun on whatever you decide to get.

i have to agree with this post.

i just picked up a 2006 RM85 for my 12-yr old son - this is his first real MX bike. he progressed from trail bikes - the XR70 to TTR125LE that he still trail rides. the TTR is longer than the RM but the RM is taller than the TTR. the RM is lighter weight and has much more HP than the TTR too. so make sure you son is ready to control the power (and himself).

as for a MX 125 - that is too tall and powerful for a kid unless they are really experienced (have been racing for years). one of our local 85 riders just moved up to 125 in MX but he qualified for amateur nationals on both bikes and felt he was a little too large to compete in the 85 class.
