Just wondering what the best mods on the kdx 200 bang for buck?

Expansion chamber?
boyesen reeds?
silencer?

Do I need to do all 3 and what sort of power gains have people had

Yes, yes, yes, and depends. Pick what area you want to improve in the engine and work that way. The pipes are tuned generally for bottom or mid, the muffler helps with opening up the exhaust for better flow (remove airbox lid and rejet), and the reeds/reed block can also help with breathing. As I understand reeds, carbon fiber for top end, fiberglass for bottom end, and dual stage for better overall gains.

seems like a lot of guys run an MX rear fender. Must mean that it increases the hp by leaps and bounds.

On your '89 E1, one of the best mods is Race Tech cartridge fork emulators, combined with the right spring for your weight.

But the best bang for the money is jetting it properly.

I think I'm gona get the fmf fatty pipe with reeds and an fmf silencer, should I start with a 45 pilot R1173N jet needle in the mid clip position, and a 152 main jet

and see where that gets me or is it better to go down one jet ata time?

Seriously, FMF desert pipe, power core II silencer, Boyesen reeds, toss away the airbox lid and then re-jet makes an awesome difference
