Best Quad for a Nine yr Boy

Looking to buy my son a Quad ATV, he's nine yr old and gowing like a weed. I want to buy something that will last him 3-4 yrs before he out grows it.

Maybe an 80cc but not sure who makes the best brand for that size.

Please advise

id say a yamaha blaster, this will be more than enough for him, maybe to much depending on his size. they are really small though...... but dont just let him get on and go. like chevy said, they are dangerous in the hands of someone with no experence. .

Not to beat a dead horse, dont assume a quad to be safer for a young kid. Having said that, there are plenty of kids that really do enjoy quads. If they take the proper saftety training courses, wear all the proper gear, and ride an appropriately sized quad. My oldest son rode a Blaster for quite some time - it worked out well for him starting from just before he turned 12 up to recently at age 15. He recently decided to move to bikes, but still does enjoy the Blaster. Unless your 9 year old is a pretty good sized kid, I would be doubtfull he is really big enough for a Blaster.

I agree with everyone else, get him a bike.
There is no bike that will fit him now, and 3 or 4 years latter.

I agree with chevy383cid. Quads are too dangerous. A friend of my son broke his leg 3 years ago. A 6 yr old died last year when one flipped on top of him with no supervision (stupid parents). Then just recently an 8 yr old was trapped under water for 20 minutes, again with no supervision. His dad performed CPR and resusitated him, but last I heard, he was still in a comma. His brains probably much after that long under water.

I'm teaching all 4 of my kids to ride bikes. I think they make better riders that way. With quads, they feel like they have too much security and control when they really don't. My son is scared on his bike, always going slow, learning as he goes, and getting better each time. When he's on my wife's quad, he's always hot roddin, doin cookies, and being crazy. He's not good enough for that stuff, and I would hate to see him get hurt like those other kids. Even if I am watching, bad things can happen very fast.

Another thing I like about bikes; they can go more places. I'm tired of my buddies with quads not being able to take the tough trails I like taking. All they do is wine about how hard it is to get through the ruts and between the tree.

Besides quads being kind of dangerous, i have a feeling your son will get bored of a 80cc 4-wheeler in 3-4 years. There are many better dirtbikes that will last him that long.Unless u were to get him a blaster (orsomething similar), which would very likely be way too much for him to handle at this point. He'd be ready for one of those in 2-3 years.

So anything over 100 CC's that I have seen are listed as 16 and older Machines.

I have a 110 cheapo, and the Girls use it once and awhile, yet they don't like it. I would need a lot more room for them to have fun. I have 60 acres and unless theres a mud puddle, its no fun for them.

If I had a boy, and I rode bikes, then I'd be getting a bike.

Obviously everyone on this forum is biased, but since you asked the question here...

A Raptor 50, Yamaha's smallest quad, weighs a little more than my KDX200 does (~250lbs). Do you really want that much weight on top of your child? Of course you don't, but realistically, it could happen.

A CRF70 is about 130lbs, has no clutch to worry about, and is a ton of fun. I recommend you search for a used one in your area, or bite the bullet and get a new one. We recently got a new one for my 9yr old and he loves it! A TTR90 could be a good choice too; same features as the CRF70 and it has electric start, which certainly will score cool points with the kids.

In some states, children under 12 can't legally ride a quad even with parent's supervision. I'm not saying I agree with it, but that is reality (in NC anyway).

Think twice about that quad.

My first was an older LT80 2t quad. I loved it but after about a year all I wanted was more more more. I'd say if you get a quad. Get a 250ex or something easy to learn on that he wont outgrow too fast. Or if you go bike get him an 80...

I see plenty of kids his age at the track riding 80's and although they are a little big for his age. in a couple of years he'll be a pro on that thing. :cool:

My 6 year old son rides a Kasea mini 50 quad and a Suzuki JR 50 bike. He prefers the quad. We can't get him off of the quad and he hardly rides the bike (although it may be because he doesn't have to worry about "balancing" the quad). I wanted to give him both options because I started on bikes and, even though I'm old and "ride a couch" now, I used to ride bikes and there is just something unique about a bike. My Knees got too bad for bikes so now I'm lazing around on a KFX 400 and loving it. We have a number of bikes and quads in the family and the 2003 Kasea Skyhawk 90 has been beaten on by the older cousins mercilessly and still runs like a top and looks good. I would recommend that quad, it has a throttle screw so you can limit the amount of throttle that junior can get so that helps, and it is sturdy and fairly light for a 90 (as well as much cheaper than the big 4 junior quads). As long as you have a decent dealer in the area, I wouldn't rule out Kasea. The little mini-50 has been bulletproof so far, also.
As long as safety is a priority and parents supervise, the quads are a blast and we haven't had any major injuries thus far (not saying it won't happen, because if you ride bikes or quads, eventually you are gonna wipe out and I do agree that you can "get rid" of a bike easier while quad is more likely to land on top of ya-which isn't a good thing). I kinda hope he eventually chooses bikes, but we'll have fun on whatever he chooses and try to guide him safely. BTW, the 90cc Skyhawk quad does have a safety warning label that says it is for riders "over 12 only" so be aware of that (even though our resident 12 year old always wants to ride the Yamaha Blaster because his skills and stature are well beyond the 90).

Another badthing about 4-wheelers is that if a hill is rutted you could high center it but if you were on a bike you could make it up without a worry. My freinds dad did that on a hill and got in front of it to try to hold it. then It rolleddown and flipped about 4x nothing was broke just the front brakelever was bent down. Luckily he was in front of it so he wasn't hurt.

Buying a 250ex is not really an option for your soon now because there are so many laws or soon to be laws for kids riding atvs. on the other hand, you get im an 80 mx'er he will ride it till hes 14 and it will be a blast. But if he is timid towards riding definalty dont get him on a bike that he cant handle, break him in slow.

Man times have changed. I used to ride my cousins lt250 when I was like 11-12 yrs old. I think the laws have always been there but never really inforced. Plus we were way out in the country so wouldnt really matter anyway.

Now don't force him to ride something he doesnt want to BUT.... I still say get him an 80-85 mxer. If he has any kind of passion towards motorcycles in general, he should fall in love with it the first time he sits on it. I know I did when I got my first 80.

I just wanted to say that if u get him a bike, you'll probably have to get him a 65 if you go with a mx bike unless he's pretty big for a nine yr. old. Or, there are many other options if you want a more offroad geared bike, like a tt-r, xr, dr-z, or klx.

Also, about all the laws with 4-wheelers, i don't think they're enforced 'cause i always see little kids flying around on 250's and up. but hey, maybe that's just me...
