"SEATTLE (Dec. 7) - The man who used 16-inch feet-shaped carvings to create tracks that ignited the 'Bigfoot' legend has died. He was 84.

Ray L. Wallace's family admitted his role in the creature myth after his death Nov. 26 from heart failure.

``The reality is, Bigfoot just died,'' his son, Michael, said.

In August 1958, a bulldozer operator who worked for Wallace's construction company in Humboldt County, California, found huge footprints circling and then leading away from his rig.

The Humboldt Times in Eureka, California, coined the term ``Bigfoot'' in a front-page story about the phenomenon.

Family members said Wallace asked a friend to carve the wooden feet that he and his brother Wilbur wore to create the tracks.

The nation - fascinated by tales of the Himalayan Abominable Snowman - quickly bought into the notion of a homegrown version.

``The fact is there was no Bigfoot in popular consciousness before 1958. America got its own monster, its own Abominable Snowman, thanks to Ray Wallace,'' Mark Chorvinsky, editor of Strange magazine, told The Seattle Times.

Wallace cut a record of supposed Bigfoot sounds, printed posters of a Bigfoot sitting with other animals and provided films and photos that purported to show the creature eating elk and frogs, Chorvinsky said.

Chorvinsky believes the family's admission raises serious doubts about key ``proof'' of Bigfoot's existence: the so-called Patterson film, with its grainy images of an erect apelike creature striding away from the camera operated by rodeo rider Roger Patterson in 1967.

Wallace said he told Patterson where to spot a Bigfoot near Bluff Creek, California, Chorvinsky recalled. ``Ray told me that the Patterson film was a hoax, and he knew who was in the suit.''

Michael Wallace said his father called the Patterson film ``a fake'' but claimed he'd had nothing to do with it. But he said his mother admitted she had been photographed in a Bigfoot suit, and that his father ``had several people he used in his movies.''

The disclosure is not fazing others who study such creatures.

Jeff Meldrum, an associate professor of anatomy and anthropology at Idaho State University, says he has casts of 40 to 50 footprints he believes were made by authentic unknown primates.

``To suggest all these are explained by simple carved feet strapped to boots just doesn't wash,'' Meldrum said, noting 19th century accounts of such a creature.

Chorvinsky says those early reports were mistakes, myths or hoaxes." Copyright 2002 The Associated Press

Oh great, so if Bigfoot doesn't exist that means that the furball I saw last night was my neighbor in his boxers.  :scream:  I think I need to introduce that man to body waxing.  :|

You guys aren't going to believe this but I’m telling you anyhow; we use to have a ranch in Northern Ca. (1959-67) is was about 10 mile NW of Vacaville, the area was call wild horse canyon back then, anyhow a school buddy and I went out to one of the many ponds out there to shoot Bullfrogs and jackrabbits and anything else we could find. While we were at this one pond we noticed some very big and very deep impressions in the mud, we thought they were horse tracks or something. On are way back to the house we saw a very large group of people coming towards us, when they saw us four of them started running at us and the rest just stopped, the four were Police and the rest were neighbors, It turns out that my buddies Dad was working in his barn when he smelt this nasty smell, he turned towards the door and he said that this thing was standing there watching him, he took off running into his house, grabbed his gun and called the cops and they intern sent out a search party for Steve and I. They never said what it was but his Dad swore it wasn’t a bear, because they just weren’t in that area and bears don’t stink like that.

I never smelt anything, nor did I see anything, only those impressions in the mud

Believe it or not

My Uncle was given a plaster cast of a Bigfoot track. If it was a fake someone went to way too much trouble carving lines and wrinkles in the skin that was visible in the impression.
Bigfoot may be a fake, but I am not convinced that Sasquatch is.
Do a search for red headed giants.

If someone asked you to where a bigfoot suit and parade around where you might be seen, would you do it? Seems like someone would shoot the actor. Heck, that lady on TV shot the lockness(sp) monster!

Anybody remember the movie "The Legend of Boggy Creek?" It was like a Blair-Witch-style fake documentary about these guys who go into the forrest looking for signs of Bigfoot. Their cabin gets attacked in the middle of the night. It scared the junk outta' me as a kid. I'm still trying to find a copy of it so I can see if it really was that scary.

I'm a skeptic and I think Jaybird has hit the nail on the head when it comes to most Bigfoot sightings. Those accounts of local indian tribes reporting this creature long ago, before the white man showed up, are bogus. Remember these people also believed in the Thunderbird. As for the Patterson film, leading zoologists from all over the world have viewed this tape. They all point to the same conclusion. There is clearly a parting line in the hair, down the back of the "creature" in the film. Something that is not present in any simian be it a chimpanzee, a gorilla, or Gus the forklift driver.

Yep! That's the one! Anyone know where I can get that on DVD or video? I've done a ton of searches in the past and it seems to be "out of print" or unavailable. I'd love to add it to my collection.

As for the availability of the Boggy Creek film: IMDB says the film was released on VHS/DVD on July 2, 2002

And looky here from Amazon.com
