4 weeks ago, I was out riding with my buddy and his wife, we were all havin a great time, that is until I launched off a jump and was off balance. Unlucky for me, the bike got away from me and I came down on my right leg, breaking both my tibia and fibula bones about 4-6 inches up from my ankle.

I was rushed to the hospital and had surgury. They put in a rod and 3 screws.

Has anyone sustained such and injury, if so..has your leg healed completly and how long was it before you were able to get back on your bike? Im a littel worried about being able to ever ride again...this is my first broken bone, so I dont really know what to expect. Thanks!!

Broke my Tib once near the knee, but your injury sounds alot like one my 13 year old had this year. He had a tri planar tib/fib fracture right above the ankle....they stopped short of using any hardware, because nothing had really moved much...he spent 6 weeks in a cast and then a few more in a walking brace. Really, it took 12 or 15 weeks before he was thru it all the way.
Jeez, now youd never know it was broke....

The younger you are, the faster/easier healing will be in general...

Thanks for information.

This is my 4th week in a cast, I go back to the OS in 2 weeks, that will be the big one. Thats when the OS wants to see some signs of the bone healing. My last OS visit showed no signs yet, but they measured me for a leg brace so hopefully everything goes ok. Im not as young as I once was, but I am only 30 yrs old...so hopefully I still have enough youth in me to be able to recover.... :whoa:

Again, thanks for the insight.

sounds pretty similar to mine which happened on 23rd january. I have a plate and 12 screws in my tibia from the ankle to about 8 inches up the leg. I spent 8 weeks in plaster then another 8 in a moonboot which is like a cast but you can take it off for showers etc. Wasn't allowed to put any weight on it at all up untill the last 2 weeks of having the boot on. Took a couple of weeks to be able to walk without crutches. Everything has healed up properly but I still get a bit of pain where the plate is and have limited movement in my ankle so I still limp a bit at the mo. Had last visit with specialist last week and he said it was all a matter of time now and to keep exercising it etc and it should come right although I will always know it's there. The cold weather here isn't helping it to much either.
Hoping to get back on the bike in a couple more months.
Yours should heal up good too you just have to be patient and not push it too much and you'll be back at it.

Just remember to do some rehab exercieses. A couple years back I broke my tib/fib and had three pins put in, I didn't do my exercises as much as I should have, and I believe my injury was dragged out because of that. When you get back out there take it easy and have fun.

Good luck :ride:

welcome to the titanium club! ask your dr about some of the new bone density/growth drugs. some drs give that following a serious break - esp for us old guys. also, welcome to "old" age - (re)learn to like milk (skim) and take calcium at least until bones are healed. both men and women begin to lose bone density after mid-20's -- translated to, we break easier and heal slower.

You'll be fine. I was back riding about 6 months after my tib/fib break. And I didn't have any hardware. Good spirits and determination are your friends. Good Luck.
