Buying a modified bike, yes or no?

Have the engine torn down on the XR. With the head and cylinder off, now is the time to upgrade if I'm gonna do it. Probably a 415 or 440 kit and upgraded valves.

But...

I'm also at the point where I'm seriously thinking about a new bike,
something lighter and more competitive. But realistically it may be next year (depending on what Honda does to counter the WR/KTM enduro bikes) before I buy. So that means probably one more season on the XR.

Although there is a good chance the XR will be kept for a buddy bike or as my back up, if I were to do some mods would it hurt my chances at reselling the bike if I chose to do so?

If you were gong to buy used would you shy away from an overbored bike? I know I won't get the $ out of it I put in so should I just keep it as stock as possible and "gut it out" this next year with the current set up?

Like any used bike I would look it over closely and ask lots of questions. In the case of a big bore I'd want to know who did the work, what parts were used and how much time it has on it. If everything seemed in order I'd have no problem. It's YOUR bike now so make it what you want. Now if your going to put pink plastic with zebra strip graphics and seat cover,... weeeeell then you might have some resale issues.

Seems like I'll be in the minority but keep it stock if you're going to sell. Mods done by others always scare me, I'm not sure why.
Maybe because when something breaks, if it's stock, I know where to get the parts. If I do the mods, hopefully I'll remember what's what and be able to fix it.
Maybe it's because I've seen too much sleazy work.
