There is nothing there. I drive through the area to go to Jawbone Cyn which is 40 miles north on 14 or cut over to Spangler Hills. Both in my opinion are better than Lucerne Valley. I have only been to Lucerne Valley once and was not impressed. I'm from northern california and like the ground and terrian around Jawbone Cyn and Spangler Hills, Red Mtn better. Lucerne is huge and I only rode small amount. Some was fun. Barstow area is ok

I've ridden in Cal City a couple of times, and had a great time. Lots of sand and technical trails, some nasty climbs, etc etc. Going with someone that knew the trails was extremely helpful, but we did some serious miles and found plenty of challenging terrain. We camped out there, and there was plenty of room for the kids to ride too.
There was a spark arrestor/sticker check in Randsburg, but no hassles, as everyone was legal.

Just got back from Southern Ca. I had two day class at Sunrise MX Park near Victorville. Still have problems with jumping. I need to work on the fear factor. Only been on motorcycle since Aug 01. So eh!
I ride one to two times a week and have been to Jawbone Cyn twice since Aug and all they have are some steep hills in the OHV area and sandy washes. If you follow trails up into hills, I did 36 mile loop 2 days ago and you ride jeep trails up and down hills. Boring. I did ride some closed trails that were fun. I like Spangler Hills near Ridgecrest. This is about 40 minutes from Cal City. I bring this up because of someone mentioning Randsburg. Cal City is close. I understand your question now. You want to ride not out of Cal City but around Cal City. Go to Spangler Hills. It has hill climbs, fun desert, washes, great camping ( I hotel in ridgecrest, its easier). You can ride on or off trails. Fun single track in rocky hills, makes fun technical riding. Most of the riding is beginner and intermidiate. Some Advanced. The ground is not as soft as Lucerne Valley and you can wiggle through the bushes and blast up hills. Lots of small jumps ( I do those fine, just not 40 foot table tops and doubles yet). I love comming down to your area and so do my fanily. We also ride up north and do lots of very technical single track. This and my mountain biking experience has helped me to learn fast.
There is a map called Friends of Jawbone and can be purchased for $2 at Market in Randsburg (behind cash register) or at Ridgecrest Sprot Center (a Yamaha, Honda Dealer on China Lake Blvd)
Go to Spangler Hills and have a great time. It is 150 miles from Newport Beach, I know. No map is needed just have fun. Lots of other places to ride up there. Map needed for them.
