I had a 69RS camaro. Years later the 25th anniversary firebird trans-am (1994). It will be a bummer to see the new lines come out WITHOUT those cars.

I had a '70 Z 28 with a 300 horse 350, built to the max. The car had terrible seats, no human over 5 years old could sit in the back seats, and I had a permanent attachment to the gas pump:confused: , but with 375 dynoed hp on tap, it was a rush to step on the go pedal! A drunk driver ran a red light and slammed into the passenger side of it doing approx. 50 mph, destroying the car completely. I missed that car.

All the more reason that the only affordable hot-rods will be full sized pickups: Big V-8s' with lots of available bolt-on horse-power.
BTW, I do drive a rice-burner,and it's not bad in traffic, but I do miss the rumble of my old big-block F350 I was forced to part ways with!:silly:

Hey Spanky, was that the year with the split front bumper? Or am I thinking of the '71?? Anyhow, awesome car man, one of my all-time favorites :)

I had a 96 Z-28 6-Speed, traded it in on an LT-4 Corvette 6-Speed, after 6 months. The live rear axle was loads of fun to slide around, b not the hot ticket to low lap times.

For the $$$ you can't beat a LS1 Camaro or Firebird. You can add a minimal amount of mods and be deep into the 12's.

Yep, the split bumper with the shark's mouth grille. I had a very special paint job, as well. It was light grey at the front, and faded as you moved back, from the rear window back it was jet black. It had an airbrush painting on the hood of a knight in shining armor with a red cloak and a javelin, sitting on a horse, with blue sky and clouds in the background.

I too am disappointed. I owned a '76 Firebird Formula w/ a 400 small block. Then later owned an '86 TA. Those cars were the most fun to own of almost any vehicle I've owned (except my WR250F). This was rumored about a year ago and GM emphatically denied it then. Really chaps my butt that they would not admit it back then. Although I guess they wanted to give it just a little longer to see if the sales numbers would go up again. The sales of the Camaro/Firebird lines dropped over 30% in the last decade so I can't really blame them. If the sales aren't there then it just isn't cost effective to build them.

Sort of like what will eventually happen to the 2-Stroke dirt bikes. I believe the big 4 are on a 5 year phase-out plan. Just a matter of time.

The split bumper was available (depending on options) from 70 to 74 if my memory serves correct.

Can't blame them???? Come on, this is America. Most people buy what they are told to buy. When there are 40 to 50 times as many truck and SUV ads on TV as there are F-body ads, people buy trucks and SUVs.

I have an 86 Trans AM that needs some work sitting in the garage. I plan to have the repairs finished and give it to my son when he turns 16. I've got 3 years, so it shouldn't be too hard to finish by then.

Hey Hucker, you can be deep into the 12's with no mods. These cars rock! I am very lucky to have a 99 Firehawk #108 and a show winning 67 RS. I kinda wish we would have waited till 2002 then we would we have the first and the last! oh well. I am way too attached to the Hawk to get rid of it now.

Chip, exhaust and airfilter will get you into the 12's in the 1/4 mile. Add a 4:11 rear end and you will be sniffing the 11's... add NOS and... well you will prolly be replacing the motor soon, but it will go fast for a while.

Read Huckers post again.... it says "minimal mods". A chip, aftermarket filter and freer flowing exhaust in my book are minimal mods. Or have I read something wrong here?

the new corvettes run, i believe, 12.4 stock in the 1/4. they also handle somethin like 1.02 lateral G's...chevrolet has definately been doing their homework on that car. the only american made cars i would consider are a newer corvette or a late 70's camaro. mustangs are nice, but i dont trust fords

Chevy dealers sell the Camaro SS with a factory authorized SLP preformance package, (K&N air filter, less restrictive air box lid, and cat back exhaust, different rims & tires, better shocks and a few other cosmetic changes) this kicks the stock HP from 325 to about 340. Most of these cars hit high 12s with no owner mods. And it is the exact same engine used in the 'Vette which comes stock with 345hp, and the Z06 (LS6 engine) comes stock with 380. So it doesn't take much in the way of mods to make these puppies fly.

By the way, the chip doesn't need to be changed on 4th gen F-bodies (LT1s and LS1s), they are programmable even the shift points on the autos are programmable.

MSRP of a Z28 SS is $26,600 with the SLP package they go from $29k to 34k depending on options. Formula WS6s and Trans Am WS6s are virtually the same car as an SS, but cost a little more. A lot of bang for the buck. Any other questions, check out www.camaroz28.com

Sorry I didn't get back to your question sooner,Okie, I was out winning another 1st place trophy for my RS. These cars are way more powerful than GM lets on. GM claims the Camaro and Firebird have 320 hp. The Firehawk claims 327hp. (this was for 1999 because that is what I own). My Hawk was put on a dyno with only 2000 miles on it and no mods. None. It made 315 rear wheel horsepower. Add 17% (the loss calculation for a 6 speed) and that translates to 368 at the crank. That is 41 more hp than GM claims.

Now add that power, with traction, weight reduction and a good driver and you have yourself all the 12 sec. runs you want. It is all about the 60 ft times. Gotta hook up!

Brenda

If you are really interested in what these cars can do, check out LS1.com. There is a message board there and more information than you could want.

Thump- I thought you were elaborating on motochicks statement about a non-modified car running 12s'. Until Higs4 posted about factory modifications, I was unaware they did that. My apologies to all. This is why I enjoy coming here though---I learn something new every day, especially when I put my foot in my mouth, 'cause you guys are so quick to point out error around here.:)
