That is an '86 CR, not an '88.

Not saying you're wrong. But that bike looks a bit like a mutt. According to the link I posted, the '86 had a rear drum brake, gold rims and blue shock covers. The picture "Evader 53" posted has neither of those.

What's the VIN? I believe the 10th character will tell you.

I used to have an '86. It did have drum rear brakes and gold rims. I would have to go with ATD and say it's an '87/'88. Patman has given the best advice. Look at the VIN on the neck of the frame. The 10th digit will correspond to a year. Post the 10th digit here and someone can tell you for sure.

I was referring to the picture you posted. The pic in the link is an '86, but I think the threadstarter's bike is an '87.

I was thinking it was an 87. How do you post pictures? When I try to put the
tags in it says "Spamkiller: you're post contains links, please delete these links before posting your message"

or even if you don't figure out by the vin, if you still have stock rims it should say the year it was made. eg it might say 7 92 which means it was made in july 1992 thus making it a 1993 model. hope this helps.

That bike is a 1987 .The exhaust pipe on a '88 was the first 'Lowboy Design" which the bike in the picture is not, also as mentioned the '86 had a drum rear brake which the bike in the picture has a disc. The seat is a '87 not that that defines what year the bike is because some seats can be used on different year bikes. The pipe is the key and by that deduction it's a 1987 CR250.Loved the forks, motor and handling of that bike.

That only tells you when the rims were made, not the motorcycle. But it should be close.

Definitely a 1987. I had an '87, my brother had an '88 and I had an '89, plus my buddy had an '85. The '88 had the lowboy pipe, the '86 had the "CR" as an outline on the seat. The '87 has the CR as shown in this picture. The only thing off is that the frame on this one has been repainted white. The '87 had Honda "red" (which really was pretty orange looking to me).

Count to the 10th letter in the Vin, this is the Year code letter on all mtcs, atvs etc. and use the link below to find out the year...Scroll down past the ads! If you have a bike older than 1980 then your Vin will be short and I dont know the code for the older ones.
Hope this heps!

The VIN information for various Yamaha 50, 80, 125, 180, and 200 are listed below. This VIN info is difficult to obtain, and as you can see it's very preliminary at this point...

The 9th digit of the VIN is a check digit, and varies according to the production (serial) number at the end (last 7 digits) of the VIN.

The 10th digit of the VIN is the year code. The letters I, O, Q, U, Z are not used to avoid confusion with numbers::

1980 A 1981 B 1982 C 1983 D 1984 E 1985 F 1986 G 1987 H 1988 J 1989 K 1990 L 1991 M
1992 N 1993 P 1994 R 1995 S 1996 T 1997 V 1998 W 1999 X 2000 0 2001 1 2002 2 2003 3

Note that if your scooter was manufactured from say 2/86 - 2/87, it's likely to be a '87 model. This is fairly standard practice in the automobile and motorcycle industry.

The quotes above were stolen from the www. This is US only.
Canada used/uses a different vin code, similar to the pre 1980 US vin code.
