Carb jetting question

New bike and preety new dirt rider. The plug is preety sooty. I have taken off the air box cover since there is not much water where I ride. I have also opened up the air mixture screw to about 3 turns out to increase the air mixture. That should help but its still rich.

My riding may be part of the problem. I ride tight woods and tend to lug the engine a bit in 2nd and 3rd since I am still getting comfortable on the bike.

Since I am not doing a lot of full throttle stuff, would it be good to decrease my pilot and/or needle jet size as a first step?

if you still have the stock jetting it would be a very good idea to change your jets, stock bikes come jetted too rich, check out http://justkdx.dirtrider.net and go under tech tips for some jetting advice
